CALGARY The street outside her Sunnyside home still consumed with a murky, foot-deep puddle, and a small army of volunteers tracking wet mud through her home, Brenna Wathke perched over a sign that read: Hey neighbours, good news! We all own waterfront properties.
Hers had been one of dozens of communities hard-hit by the rising rapids of the Bow River. The torrent swamped her neighbourhood, leaving as much as seven feet of water in some homes.
I dont even know half of them, the accountant said. We may have lost things of value, but whats priceless is the help Im getting.
This stretch of Sunnyside may still be uninhabitable, but no one here is waiting for the government to fix everything. Dozens of friends, neighbours and perfect strangers have just shown up, providing free food, generators and pumps. Volunteers in thick rubber boots were directed to homes in need. There, they shovelled mud or moved strips of sodden carpets through windows. Its a scene thats starting to replicate itself throughout the city.

Alberta is the Texas of Canada.
Canada Ping!
Saw some video of what’s happening there. It sure looked pretty bad.
From what I saw of Manitoba it looked like it was the Dakotas of Canada.
Bump
Unfortunately some of us that are wanting to help will not be able to get to the hardest hit areas, for about a week. Tried to make my way down to High River today, with food and a BBQ. Just an impromtu BBQ for the volunteers etc, but the town will be closed off for about a week. I’ll head down then, donate my time, some food and after reconstruction starts, donate more time and skills.
the town of High River was totally wiped out. Not sure there is 1 house without extensive water damage.
