Refrigerators won’t make good Faraday cages. The door isn’t connected to the box via metal, that rubber gasket is great for keeping the cold inside, but for radio signals it’s an opening.

But what conversations or information are they going to pick up in a dark, closed refrigerator?

The purpose might not be to block the signal as much as provide an effective barrier to light and ordinary sound.
