You can't win a rigged game

I had the opportunity very recently to have an extended conversation with a young gentleman who officially became a U.S. citizen just over a month ago. He claimed that he had always felt he “belonged here,” took the first opportunity to come to the U.S. presented to him and “never looked back.” He worked all sorts of jobs, traveled all over the country and met people from every socioeconomic sector and demographic.

Coming from a country where the citizens have substantially less opportunity than in America and a more or less homogenous population, there were many things he still found strange about the U.S., even after having been here for more than 10 years. We talked about a multitude of subjects, from nationalized health care to race relations. He said that he often pondered certain inconsistencies, like why so many Americans harbor antipathy for their own country, why so many don’t vote and why young black celebrities are so angry being but a few. Like many naturalized immigrants I have encountered, his was more intense curiosity than judgment.

Describing his swearing-in ceremony, he could not have been prouder. The account of his thoughts and feelings as he and his fellow new citizens pledged allegiance to the flag and sang the National Anthem was nothing less than spiritual. “Something changed in my heart,” he said more than once. He related suddenly feeling part of something great and finally connected to all of the people who had gone before him to contribute to the success of this nation – and how America’s history of immigration played a big part in that.

We did talk about immigration in the U.S., and what stood out to me most was his belief that his citizenship meant so much more to him because he had to

. . . what stood out to me most was his belief that his citizenship meant so much more to him because he had to work for it . . .

And that, in the minds of the ruling class, is the crux of the problem. People who have to work for something are more inclined to become patriotic Americans and less likely to become drones who are grateful to their ruling class masters.

This Amnesty bill is 1200 pages filled with many different ways to bring in more 3rd world immigrants so democrats can have more voters to turn the USA into a fully socialist state.

Think things are bad now? wait until this passes and then it will be like a socialist coup. These democrats really believe from “each according to his ability to each according to his need” : that means you own nothing , the state owns everything and the state determines who gets what .

I know people like the guy he is describing. They patiently wade through 8 to 10 years in Bureaucrat Hell to become Americans. They get raked for tens of thousands of dollars in legal costs and filing fees, have to submit to medical exams and the indignity of being fingerprinted.

We will be flipping them all the bird if we grant amnesty.

“bring in more 3rd world immigrants so democrats can have more voters to turn the USA into a fully socialist state.”

You can have a socialist state. You can have open borders. You can’t have both.

You have open borders while the state converts to socialist status, and then the borders slam shut.

True enough. I said "socialist state", in order to mirror the language that Democrat_media used in his comment. I was adapting a quote from Milton Friedman, who said:

"It's just obvious you can't have free immigration and a welfare state,"

I should have resisted the temptation to alter Friedman's quote; because, apparently, I corrupted it beyond meaning. Actually, you can have a "socialist" state and borders open to immigration; because you will soon reach the point where no one wants to immigrate to your country. OTOH, the borders of communist states or usually closed to emigration, because most productive citizens want to leave. In that sense, my original statement was correct (the borders aren't "open"); but, we were discussing unfettered immigration, so Friedman's original statement is far better.

The truth of Friedman's statement is obvious, upon a moment's reflection. If you have an advanced social-welfare system (free schools, free medical care, income distribution, etc.) your country will be attractive to anyone living in a less prosperous country. With open borders, immigration will take place until conditions deteriorate to match those of the people-exporting countries. At that point, you still have open borders; but, you no longer have an advanced welfare state. Well before that point, your own productive citizens will start wanting to emigrate. They might find that difficult; because countries that they would want to move to will not have open borders. These formerly productive citizens will find themselves saying: "I don't want to live in any country that would have me as a citizen." (To mangle another quote.)
