I never heard of her before this scandal broke, but I say, good.
I would guess that her big mistake was to hire black assistants, and give them jobs. It was back in the day when not many blacks did that kind of work, and people hadn’t quite realized that if you hired a black person, you were stuck forever, whether they bothered to do any real work or not. Because otherwise it would go to the trial lawyers and you would be punished for being a racist.
No, it wasn’t nice calling people names, but back when I was a kid everybody did it, and thought nothing of it. At least there was a kind of even-handedness about it—nothing personal. And it wasn’t just blacks. And if the school bullies called you a name, you just ignored it, or hit them back.
Two of my best buds in high school were a Hispanic kid named Richardo and a Jewish kid named Michael.
We called each other "Rick the Spic", "Mike the Kike" and I was "Roy the Redskin."
