House Passes 2014 NDAA; NSA Surveillance Will Lead to Indefinite Detention

The annual renewal of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) is underway on Capitol Hill.

On June 14, by a vote of 315-108, the House of Representatives passed the Fiscal Year 2014 version of the NDAA (HR 1960). Several amendments to the defense spending legislation were proposed, many of which were approved either by voice vote or en bloc. The first method of voting requires no report on how individual members voted, while the second method aggregates amendments, allowing them to be voted on in groups.

A few of the amendments represent significant improvements to the NDAA of 2012 and 2013. The acts passed for those years infamously permitted the president to deploy U.S. military troops to apprehend and indefinitely detain any American he alone believed to be aiding enemies of the state.

While the 2014 iteration doesn’t go far enough in pushing the federal beast back inside its constitutional cage, there are at least a few congressmen willing to try to crack the whip and restore constitutional separation of powers and shore up a few of the fundamental liberties suspended by the NDAA of the past two years.

First, there is the amendment offered by Representative Trey Radel (R-Fla.). Radel’s amendment requires the Department of Defense to submit to the Congress a report every year containing: (1) the names of any U.S. citizens subject to military detention, (2) the legal justification for their continued detention, and (3) the

Thanks. I’d rather be working on my 5th novel, but time is too short to spend on multi-year projects.

Not just the ‘RATS. More than a few Repubs voted for the first NDAA deal, including an old favorite of mine, (no longer of course), one who I wanted as Sarah’s VP in ‘16, Congressman Allen West. Yep, Allen West voted FOR the indefinite detention of American citizens who might be picked up and off our own streets on just the say so of the Feds if we are deemed a ‘terrorist’ or made ‘terrorist statements’. (remember, Joe Biden called the Tea Party Terrorists.) No attorney, no trial, no judge, no due process required of any kind.....indefinitely. Allen West voted ‘AYE’.

Will tell the story where I too became familiar with the Patriot Act. A close friend of my Son came into contact with the Patriot Act. To make a long story short, I once supported the Patriot Act. It was wrong of me to ask my representative to support that Act. The Act is currently being used against law abiding citizens. The Act was also used against my Son's friend. Lots of strangeness in the Patriot Act as well as coupled with the strangeness of today. My Son's friend is now out of jail after having spent a little over six months in jail. He was arrested on the word of someone who said he was making on-line threats against people being in our nation illegally. Wasn't true but took six months to sort it out.

btw ... my Son left the country. Not because he was running away. Instead he was running toward a job. I pray he stays out of this nation. Too much is no longer right. My Son could not find work in this nation.
