If ever I thought myself objective and unbiased, the George Zimmerman trial is definitely not that moment.
So let's cut to the chase. Any attorney, jury member, judge or white person in that courtroom is not going to understand Rachel Jeantel. And I don't expect them to.
In fact, I certainly, like my fellow writer Rachel Samara, understand why white people wouldn't like Rachel.
She's hard. She's black. And your assumptions about her background and lack of education make you feel like you are better, somehow. That her testimony, no matter how powerful and impactful it may be to this trial, is implausible. Weak, maybe? Let's impeach her.
But maybe the reason white people don't understand Rachel Jeantel has something more to do with white privilege then, what they would call, Rachel's capricious nature.
Let's for one second try to understand why Rachel is "angry" (read emotional), "hood" (read blunt), and "unintelligent" (read multilingual).
The thing is, what white people see in Rachel has little to do about her own issues, and more to say about the America that white people are blind to. Let's take her testimony on not calling the police, for example.

I'm reminded of how incredible it seemed that the USA would elect Barack Obama again. Who on earth could vote for him??? But win he did, and I suspect Team Trayvon is going to win as well. That's where we are as a country.

Hey Christina, Rachel was taken advantage of by Crump and the Martins to promote a lie in a deposition. She was abused by her own race.
Not somehow, but in most ways.

Are we really “priveledged” because be know lying when we hear it?
Blacks have attended the same schools as whites for over 50 years now...what privilege did whites have over the blacks?
This person is going into th 12th grade, and cannot read cursive, but, she had the same classrooms as white students.
What does this columnist mean by “white privilege” anyway. Does it mean that white people have more money? More opportunity? Better parenting? What?
The witness has perjured herself twice on the stand, but I don’t see anyone charging her with “perjury”...that’s certainly a privilege. Even with some of here attitude and snark, no one has declared her a “hostile witness”...that’s privilege.
She’s presented inarticulate, incoherent and “evolving” testimony, and even inferred that the defense attorney was “retarded”, but no one has admonished her for any of it. That’s privilege.
Columnists and the media trying to pull the “race safety net” around her and spin her testimony doesn’t cancel out what see and hear from her.
There’s no group of people in the past 50 years that have had more opportunity, and “privileges” that blacks have had...none! But they’ve got to keep the facade Alive to keep those goodies coming.
People of sound mind and at least a 5th grade education heard and saw that “star witness” fiasco, and of the Juan Williams in the world can’t change that with spin. You can’t put the toothpaste back into the tube!

I agree with the author that the black world and the white world are worlds apart. The world that whites create is far less violent, far less criminal, far more literate, far more entrepreneurial, far more hardworking, and far more respectful of law, structure, and other people.
Not only is she lying about Zimmerman, she is withholding information about Martin telling her how he was going to beat on the white cracker. Other than lying and dishonesty, she is your typical hoodlem gimmedat punk.
But maybe the reason white people don’t understand Rachel Jeantel is because she is dumb as a brick and a petty liar.

Well, if you want to answer that question, first, look at whom you can’t criticize - they are your masters.
And, look at who’s doing the work and who’s reaping the benefits.
Instead, you end up with "angry" (read emotional), "hood" (read blunt), and "unintelligent" (read multilingual)" doing exactly what you'd expect from someone who does this over and over, from a societal level where this is accepted, encouraged and defended so circularly, that the upside down world actually looks at her and gives here a pass.
IMO, Rachel is simply putting your everyday, average ghetto chic on display for all the sane world to see, who cannot help but laugh at a society that does not have the wherewithal to fix itself and begs the people who caused their mess, to fix it for them. She put higher value on "court nails" than truth. She put more value in "court hair" than truth. Save for the few who have extricated themselves and their families, the prices seems to be too high to pay, so they accept it, sadly.
I liken the plight to the abused spouse who returns to their abusive partner over and over claiming someone is going to fix it for them.
I don't know squat about her background, but her lack of education is not something anybody has to "assume", it's pretty obvious.
Dumb people always think everyone else is as “smart” as they are.
Until you prove otherwise, then they think you are “hateful”, “mean”, “misanthropic”, etc...
