Chicago prepares for new concealed carry gun law

CHICAGO (AP) — This city, where violent street gangs shoot it out dozens of times a week despite some of the nation's toughest restrictions on guns, now faces a new challenge: Well-meaning citizens with the legal right to hit the streets with loaded firearms, whenever they want.

As Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn mulls whether to sign off on eliminating the country's last concealed carry ban, the question in Chicago is whether it will matter in the crime-weary city. Will a place that long had some of the nation's tightest restrictions on handguns be more at risk? Or will it be safer with a law that can only add to the number of guns already on the street?

Neighborhood leaders, anti-crime activists and police officials worry about additional mayhem in Chicago. But other residents, including some who live in Chicago's more violent areas, believe more guns will allow them to defend themselves better.

"We just had a weekend where something like 48 people were shot, seven died," said Otis McDonald, 79, one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit that ended with the U.S. Supreme Court tossing out Chicago's strict gun ban three years ago. "Now law abiding citizens like myself ... can carry them when they want to and not carry them when they don't want to, and the people out there who will do us harm won't know when we got them and when we don't."

At City Hall, where Chicago's anti-gun campaign has centered for years, the reaction to concealed carry legislation has been relatively quiet. The reasons seem to boil down to this: The city can do little about stopping the law because a federal appeals court ordered Illinois to end its public possession ban by this summer.

Because in every other state that passed shall issue concealed carry laws saw an immediate increase in street corner shoot-outs between angry motorists who got cut off.

Look for the MSM to be all over the first case of someone protecting themselves.

MSM will not note the crime rate dropping.

MSM is bought and paid for by 0.

The ballerina needs to patrol the South Side weekend nights to achieve weapon compliance.

The only change is that law abiding citizens might have a gun now in the mix on Chicago streets. Might make for a bit more polite society after a couple of more night of street violence as usual in the windy city.

Bullies really are cowards. They tend not to instigate violence if there is any chance of them being hurt. And now any 70 year old granny can kick their rears. I can hear the sighs of remorse from the young dumb and stupid ranks already.

When I was in Mexico it was far, far worse than the way Hollywood portrays the 1870’s wild, wild west. It was obvious that if Mexicans were allowed to carry concealed that the violence would be reduced. The bad guys ride up and down the street shooting people. (While I was there they killed four school kids in their uniforms in a drive-by.) Just after I left there was a two hour shootout between gangs in a major shopping mall. (I’d been to that mall.) If everybody had the right to guns that shootout would have been considerable shorter or, more likely, would not have happened in the first place.

Jessie James’s gang was essentially ended by the citizens of a small town who all ran to the bank he was robbing and opened fire on him. (Yeah, it did go on for a short time after that, but that was essentially his finish.)

So are they telling us the twits in Chicago are dumber or less responsible then 99.9% of the rest of the Country? Everyone has managed this without it causing any problems at all.

Most of the killings are felon-on-felon, so CCW would not be a factor. I’m hoping that it will reduce popularity of “knockout game”

It's time to even the playing field between law abiding citizens and criminals.

The real criminals are the lib politicians who seek a populace of unarmed victims, and understand fully well the implications of their "anti-gun" false arguments. The actual armed perps on the streets are merely the shock-troops of these mafia-like overlords hiding behind suits and ties.

Chicago has one of the toughest gun control laws and it leads the nation in murders. Liberals can’t explain that.

You’re right. They don’t want the violent crime rates to go down.

So what are liberals in Chicago worried about? The criminals all have illegal guns already...and the liberals worry about law abiding citizens carrying a gun?

This might actually result in Chicago having some shooters that know how to hold a pistol upright.

It is the number of available criminals, not the number of guns that drive crime statistics. Arming law abiding citizens will not drive up the stats and will likely save some lives.
