A floating wind turbine for electricity generation off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture has been completed at a Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co. shipyard in Chiba Prefecture.

The 2,000-kilowatt wind turbine, which was unveiled to the media on Tuesday, has a rotor with a diameter of 80 meters and sits on a structure supported by a set of three 32-meter-high cylindrical iron floats.

Keisuke Murakami, chief of the New and Renewable Energy Division of the ministry-affiliated Natural Resources and Energy Agency, expressed hope to “make a success of the project as a symbol of reconstruction in Fukushima.”

Except that the fish will ignore the bait because it isn't pre-minced and they're already full on fowl.

Yea , that was my first thought.
Plus what kind of rotational variance will the bobbing of the waves have on the rotors which are essentially a flywheel.
If you ever held a bicycle wheel while it was spinning, you'll agree that they don't like lateral forces.

I hope it works. It would take about 500 of these to generate 1 GW, which is the average output of a single nuclear power plant (I don’t know how big the Fukushima plant was, with it’s multiple reactors). I wonder how much area that would take up, as big windmills need some separation so that they don’t mess up each other’s airflow environment.

Thanks for the recipes. I now understand why we don’t have an open season on seagulls here in Kansas!
