For one group of women, Saturday was the first time they ever shot a gun, but it was for a good reason! A special group was in Humbolt to help teach the group about self-defense when using a firearm.
At Hunter's Point Shooting Club, over 50 women of all ages were taking safety to a whole new level.
“I don't want to be scared, I want to be prepared,” said Kara Williams, Brandon.
Williams and her friend Candace Berndt were just two women taking part in Saturday's firearms self-defense class. The woman said they've wanted to learn how to safely and correctly use a gun for years, they just never got the chance.
“I'm looking forward to this, and I feel very blessed to be able to have this group here in South Dakota instructing us,” said Candace Berndt, Sioux Falls.
Not only do the women get to fulfill their goal, but they get to learn from a former Navy Seal. Mark Hotaling is the President of the Makhaira Group. The team travels around the United States to teach women self-defense using a gun.
“It’s not that any of us want a confrontation, or any one of us wants to deploy a firearm or a weapon of any kind,” said Hotaling. “But if we aren't prepared we are just going to another victim.”
Hotaling and his team of experts teach these women how to use their weapons safely, but effectively, so they will know how to react if they need to defend themselves. They also get the chance to learn what firearm is best for them. Hotaling said despite what people think, some guns work better for certain people.
“There's not one gun for all of society, there's not one bullet for all of society,” said Hotaling. “It depends on the individual, their hand size; there are different factors like that.”
But most importantly, Hotaling said at the end of the eight hour day, he wants these ladies to walk away with an extra boost of confidence. And it's safe to say Williams and Berndt got just that.
All the women had to take a four hour class Saturday morning before they could practice shooting on the range.
Precisely. The whole point.
Women and girls. A single young girl who is trained and comfortable with guns and their use can persuade dozens of her peers that guns are “a girl thing”. It is vitally important to convince girls and women that guns are both in the feminine realm, and essential tools for their self preservation. Not just “boy toys” or “guy things”.
A girl who is experienced with guns is just as impressive to other girls as are boys to other boys. And while there are certainly going to be girls who have been trained to hate and fear guns, girls with gun experience will come across to them as more mature.
men have been saying the same thing for decades why they carry, why/doesn’t anyone believe us? women aren’t the only ones that suffer from disparity of force reasons.
After watching the video, for ‘first day, first time’, I saw a LOT of 8-, 9-, and 10-ring target hits, and all coverable with the palm of a hand.

I agree with the ‘not one gun, not one bullet’ statement.
Young shooters, elder shooters, fit shooters, arthritic-nerve damaged-war wounded shooters, recoil sensitive shooters, all!
Semi-auto or revolver, and the ammunition, thereof, are all matters of personal choice.
And as marktwain wrote, I agree!
The reason for arms possession (keep & bear) doesn't fit the Liberal template.
