CAIRO — Egypt’s powerful military issued an ultimatum to the government of President Mohamed Morsi on Monday: resolve the crisis that has pitted hundreds of thousands of Morsi’s opponents against his supporters and brought this country to a political standstill — or the military will devise its own compromise.
“The armed forces reiterates its call to meet the demands of the people, and it gives everyone 48 hours as a last chance to carry the burden of the ongoing historic circumstances that the country is going through,” military commander Abdel Fatah al-Sissi said on national television a day after huge masses of Egyptians took to the streets calling for the president’s ouster.
“If the demands of the people are not met within the given period of time, [the military] will be compelled by its national and historic responsibilities, and in respect for the demands of Egypt’s great people, to announce a roadmap for the future, and procedures that it will supervise involving the participation of all the factions and groups,” Sissie said.
Anti-government activists have called repeatedly on the military in recent days to back them in their struggle against Morsi and his supporters in the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood. Many interpreted Sissi’s remarks on Monday as a victory for their cause. . .

I’ve been following these stories on and off. I have a question...
Are the protestors just another off-shoot of Islamists who are mad because Morsi and the Brotherhood didn’t cut them in for a piece of the post-Mubarak action?
Or are these protestors real Egyptians who are suddenly saying “Whoa, we got rid of Mubarak for this assclown Morsi and his band of thugs?”.
Anyone wanna take a stab at this?

The Egyptian military has been waiting for this opportunity to reclaim the authority they wielded under Mubarak, one of their own. We’ll have to wait and see if some obscure Colonel like Nasser (or Qaddafi) is the lead man or a council of grey beard generals. Either way they aren’t likely to treat the Muslim Brotherhood gently. Besides Mubarak they still owe that group some payback for Sadat.
There's been speculation up to now that the Muslim Brotherhood had infiltrated the Army and that Morsi was helping to accelerate the process. Apparently that isn't so.
So if Morsi gets kicked out he can just return to the USA. Here he can help either of two sons who were born in the USA run for POTUSA, at least this could not only satisfy some people as to eligibility but make all the Islamists happy.
