Tea-Party Activist Konni Burton Challenges Wendy Davis for Texas Senate Seat
National Review ^ | 07/02/2013 | Betsy Woodruff

Long before Wendy Davis became a national target for the pro-life movement, Konni Burton wanted to take her down. Burton, a long-time Texas tea-party activist, decided months ago to challenge Davis for her Senate seat. It will be Burton’s first political campaign. And it might be competitive.

“It’s a marginal district, there’s no question,” says Matt Mackowiak, a Texas Republican consultant. “She won it this last cycle because the candidate we had ran a terrible, terrible race. Talk to any Republican consultant in the state, they’ll tell you that was one of the worst campaigns ran the entire cycle.”

That candidate, Mark Shelton, is running for the Republican nomination again this time. But Burton has also thrown her hat in the ring.

“I think Tarrant County is far more conservative than she’s been representing us,” says State Representative Jonathan Stickland of Davis. “And I was involved in the Mark Shelton campaign against Wendy last time and I thought it was a dismal failure, and I think that we needed a strong conservative to motivate the base to get out and vote, I don’t think that a moderate could do that, and Konni Burton is the clear conservative choice, in my opinion.”

Davis will be formidable and flush with cash. But, according to Mackowiak, many who are hopeful about Davis’s future overlook just how pro-life Texas is. So while becoming the darling of the pro-choice movement certainly has its electoral advantages, it might backfire. Because of redistricting, state senators had to draw straws to determine the lengths of their terms. Davis drew a straw giving her a two-year term.

“Once she did that, all of us that were disappointed in how the last election went kind of, you know, did a big hoorah,” Burton says. “What I thought when I looked at it was like: We get a do-over. Instead of her having a four-year term, she got a two-year term. So that was excellent.”

Despite that, Burton had trouble recruiting someone to run for the seat. So she decided to just run herself.

“She’ll be a firebrand and create a lot of excitement,” Mackowiak says.

Elizabeth Graham of Texas Right to Life isn’t as optimistic about Burton’s prospects — she says the chance of the activist taking Davis’s seat is “doubtful.”

“There will probably be a number of candidates looking at that seat,” Graham says, adding that her group will endorse the candidate they feel best represents the pro-life movement.

Burton has racked up a number of other endorsements, including from business leaders, Stickland, and JoAnn Fleming, chair of the Advisory Committee to the TEA Party Caucus of the Texas Legislature. She’s also hired a consultant, Luke Macias. And thanks to Davis’s filibuster, fundraising has picked up.

“I was doing well with fundraising previous to this, but this has certainly helped, this pro-abortion stand that Wendy has taken,” Burton tells me. “It’s a stand for abortions after five months! It’s helped immensely.”

Burton and her husband have two daughters, both adopted, so the pro-life issue is especially personal for them.

“We are adoptive parents, and we have daughters that have birth mothers that were so brave and so wonderful, and thought first of the life, instead of themselves,” she says.

But she didn’t enter politics because of the abortion issue. Burton tells me that she first got involved in political activism during George W. Bush’s second term because she was frustrated about spending levels and the national GOP. Since then, she’s held leadership roles with the NE Tarrant Tea Party and the Dallas Tea Party. She’s also held a seat on the advisory committee to the Texas legislature’s Tea Party caucus.

So Burton decided to enter the race because of her fiscal conservatism.

“The reason I got in was because of this fiscal mess our country is in,” Burton tells me, summarizing her comments from a recent fundraiser. “But if she wants to make this about life, bring it!”

Good luck. Don’t run away from the infanticide issue. Use it to crush her, and make her look like the Omar Al Bashir she really is.

Just make Wendy look like the daughter of Gosnell, all pro-life candidates should do that, against every pro-death demoncrat.

The reporting of Ms Wendy has been so full of BS and propoganda that it could be the worse example of media bias ever. I searched for campaign contributions for her and the first three pages were breathless Wendy for president stories. Perry made a compassionate statement that complimented Wendy’s life and it is characterized as an attack while not often airing his actual words. Even our terrible RINO Speaker Strauss criticized Perry’s words. Play the dang words from Perry. Anyone with a brain and a heart would agree.

Mike Villarreal and other Dems do seem to love him; that's a bad sign.

Wendy tried to run as a moderate democrat before. She can’t do that any more. She’s bought and paid for by NARAL - Planned Genocide now.

Absolute must read: Kirsten Powers: I don't stand with Wendy Davis

The liberal FOX News commentator gets it, and nails Davis,a and those who support her. And she states the case far better than most.

From that site:

Konni and her husband Phil reside in Colleyville and have two daughters.

That is so different than Wendy. Not guilty either.

Wendy will be running statewide in 2014, her stunt was to get statewide press, so thinks Texas Senator Dan Patrick.

She is intelligent, pleasant, and rational, which means that a compelling argument is capable of getting her to change her position.
