The Great Lakes could benefit most from Obama’s climate change aim [Kool-aid Drinker!]

Contrary to popular belief, the Obama presidency has not taken its cue from environmentalists on all major issues. Nor has it been nearly as liberal as it is accused of being, even in President Obama’s native Great Lakes region.

But if it succeeds with its ambitious, multi-tiered climate change initiative, it will take the nation off dead center on what many people – including Obama’s 2008 rival, Republican U.S. Sen. John McCain of Arizona – have described as one of Earth’s biggest crises.

The administration will set America on a new path of greenhouse gas reductions and quite possibly leave a mark on environmental law for years to come....

the Obama administration is banking on its ability to use the powers of the landmark Clean Air Act to its advantage.

It will use precedent from recent Supreme Court cases to impose the tighter rules on coal-fired power plants, but will inevitably run into a sea of litigation. Sources say that’s one reason why the administration is announcing the initiative now. It knows it will likely need the final 3.5 years of his administration for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to finalize its rules.

Barry wouldn’t know Lake Michigan if he fell in it.

This great lakes watershed map shows Illinois with the smallest possible footprint in it but American control of the great lakes has been concentrated in Chicago since Obama's election.

Great Lakes Czar Cameron Davis is a radical environmentalist from the Chicago based Alliance for the great lakes. Among their goals are removal of all dams in the watershed, pushing people back from buffer zones around all lakes, streams, swamps and marshes, and removal of all "unnecessary" bridges.

I encourage all to write to their congressmen and ask them to push to lift the Great Lakes directional drilling ban. There is a lot of gas there that we should be using.

Great Lakes Directional Drilling Ban Should Be Lifted

State geologists estimate that approximately 30 wells could be directionally drilled under the Great Lakes. Directional drilling, sometimes referred to as slant drilling, is performed at an angle, allowing placement of the well head onshore rather than on a drilling platform in the lake. While director of the Department of Environmental Quality in 1996, I was approached by companies interested in exploring for oil and gas under the Great Lakes. I asked the Michigan Environmental Science Board (a group of scientists, mostly from universities, with environmental and natural resource expertise) to study whether directional drilling under the Great Lakes posed any threat to natural resources.

The Board concluded: "There is little to no risk of contamination to the Great Lakes bottom or waters through releases directly above the bottom hole portion of directionally drilled wells." The Board went on to say: "There is, however, a small risk of contamination at the well head." The board made recommendations on steps that could be taken to mitigate any impact to the Great Lakes from the well head, including locating the wells at least 1,000 feet from the shoreline and implementing proper waste disposal measures. Before the ban, eight wells had been directionally drilled under the Great Lakes without environmental harm.
