WASHINGTON - Mayor Bloomberg, who has spent millions of dollars to attack opponents of gun control, will raise hundreds of thousands this month for an advocate of tougher gun laws.
Bloomberg will host a July 22 fundraiser at his upper East Side home for Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.V.), sources said. Tickets for the event start at $1,000.
Despite an A-rating from the National Rifle Association for his voting record, Manchin, who once ran an ad that showed him shooting environmental legislation, risked the ire of some of his rural constituents by crafting a deal with Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) to toughen federal background check requirements.
Senate opponents killed the bill through a filibuster in April, dealing a stinging defeat for gun control advocates.
Two Bloomberg-funded groups Mayors Against Illegal Guns and an affiliated political action committee -- have spent heavily to attack opponents of that bill such as Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) and Mark Pryor (D-Ark.). And the mayor has praised supporters of the legislation, such as Manchin.
But Manchin has cautiously faulted spending by the groups, suggesting they should focus more on touting the background check legislation and less on attacking its opponents.
"I would like to see more support in gun culture states such as West Virginia, such as North Dakota, Arkansas, whatever it might be, and more of an informational educational, supportive role," Manchin said last month when asked about Bloomberg's efforts on the issue.
Manchin seemed to be referencing attacks by Mayors Against Illegal Guns on Pryor and Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.), who also opposed the background check measure.
Manchin previously told the Daily News he hoped to see "maybe a little bit more balance" in spending by gun control groups, with more emphasis on educating voters.
Manchin also said that he had never discussed gun control with Bloomberg. Federal law bars lawmakers from coordinating directly with outside groups like Mayors Against Illegal Guns about spending on political ads.
The Asshats Ball. Well, at least when they're not campaigning or taking bribes.
We already have background check legislation.
Do we need more intrusion?
New York liberal Joe Manchin, the ad writes itself.
A shame his *ss isn’t up again till 2018. Nice job WV. Not one county for Obama but they elected his boy toy as Senator.
Retread loser GOP candidate John Raese didn’t help matters. Raese (also the 1984 nominee against Rockefeller) was leading the special election in 2010 but couldn’t seal the deal. No way he should’ve gotten another bite at the apple.

Typical Rat/pol...
Joe Manchin is a RAT. There is no such thing as a conservative Communist.
I believe in gun control - holding the gun with both hands that is so when you shoot you don’t miss. I figure when the sambo’s come after us crackers when Zimmerman is found innocent we will need all the control we can manage.
