... the gun had been converted to fire compressed gas, which produced bright flashes and loud gunfire sounds.

If that's the case, it's not a firearm any longer. It's a Hollywood action film "prop".

I used to live in Shelby Twp when it was part of Rochester long ago. This story is unremarkable - sounds like reasonable neighborhood watch patrol to me.

It sounds like exactly what one would need for a nice evening drive in Detroit

Or perhaps a BTR-80:

Is it Stacey David and Sgt Rock?

It certainly sounds like them, if not it's a copy of Sgt Rock.

For those not familiar, David is a rock guitarist who has had at least two TV gearhead series - 'Trucks' and 'GearZ', and Sgt Rock was one of his vehicles.

Sgt Rock is a '41 Dodge military 4x4...a verryyyy big pickup...with twin 50's mounted in the bed, firing propane...very high rate of fire, very loud, awesome.

I am guessing the guy is a member of the MVPA (Military Vehicle Preservation Association) and a car (truck) collector. I have a half dozen trucks and bikes from WWII and Vietnam. My guess it was idiot or ignorant cops.

Got pulled over a couple years age and was told the gun I had in the car was stolen in Dallas a year before. I had owned that gun for ten years. Turned out that after he got backup he found out which number was the serial number, (he even had to ask me) and I was released.

BTW, If you was to see a bunch of privately owned vintage military collector trucks, the national convention is in Portland, OR at the end of the month.

There are great cops and there are ignorant cops. Its seems the ratio is shifting in an obvious direction.

Hey, Ya'All....bye the way, this happened on the FOURTH OF JULY. What a wayyy cooolll truck to drive round on that day.

On the other hand.....

Back in '67 I was working in Walled Lake, about 40 mi. N of Detroit. Riots started on Sunday, by Wed it was supposedly calmed down, so two buddies and I decided to tour the area in my '66 Coronet conv. Was pretty neat for a while, a couple of spooky/scary things, several fires burning, all in all not too bad. Then we somehow got around roadblocks and ended up driving down the length of TWELFTH STREET....HOLY SHITE...very crowded, we were the ONLY white faces around, bullet holes and burned buildings everywhere, about halfway down we heard a 50 cal burst two or three blocks away. When we got to the end of 12th there was some Airborne units there, we asked why they weren't back yonder and their reply was 'it ain't safe to go in there yet'.

So, maybe Sgt Rock would be a cool truck to drive around in on the Fourth, just maybe in a different town.

Oh - my buddies and I did NOT return to Detroit again.
