New school lunch regulations mean financial losses for Pittsfield Public Schools

In a year of transition toward healthier school lunches, the Pittsfield Public Schools food service budget is headed for an operating loss of more than $100,000.

The reason, other than the nearly $60,000 spent to replace the failing food warming line, relates to new federal nutrition guidelines that took effect, and to a state nutrition law that limits the types of snack foods and drinks that can be sold in public schools.

"This [deficit] is in line with what is happening around the state".

The number of meals served has fallen, and revenue from snacks is well below the level from the prior year. Another factor cited was the higher cost of providing healthier foods, including more fruits and vegetables, with student meals. Behnke said that has increased food costs by 16 percent.

Why aren’t they feeding these kids Kobe beef and pizza made by chefs flown in from Chicago? If Mrs. O wants the kiddies to eat well, where is their cake?

imagine- this is the cost to just one school district of being forced to comply with the First Hippo’s feeding mandates

costs that must be paid by property taxpayers

my DD worked at a camp this summer where kids were fed with federal food and the staff was forced to watch each kid and make sure that every child took one of every item offered, whether the child wanted it or not

most of the food was wasted of course. My dd said most of it was tasteless.

I am curious, whether moochelles kids eat whatever she forces them to take?

Neither the so-called Department of Education nor the Department of Health (and Whatever, yada, yada) has “dominion” over school lunch menus. Parents and school districts have that responsibility RESERVED to them by our Constitution.

It’s time to de-fund these power-hungry wackos...

The first kids are awfully skinny looking. Maybe it’s because their mother has them served this sort of diet and they just don’t eat it.

They get food stamps ...I say let them bring lunch...Half the food is in the trash..they fill the tray with food weather the kid likes in to or not...let the kids a least pick what they want...they should have recycle for oranges and apples?? My wife was a teacher in the old days when kids learned to read and write

The number of meals served has fallen

To think of all the kids who suffered through mystery meat for decades but the lunchroom made money. Who knew that lunchroom meals could get worse but Moo's "healthy" meals has done that.

“federal rules” wouldnt even let them recycle fruit the kids wanted to toss

Some counselors wanted to take the fresh fruit and other untouched leftovers to a local shelter but NYET

Wookie must be so proud of her leadership in nutrition mandates, can’t wait for health care and carbon use run by these people

my daughter brought home a bag full of pears the kids gave her
