The other neighbor is an all-wise, perfect, noble, pure philosopher king... because he works for the government. Of course, when he quits and gets a private sector job, he will magically transform back into an ordinary human being.
The very meaning of America is that imperfect men must both be restrained from potential misdeeds by government, yet those same imperfect and untrustworthy men also populate the government. The same nature of people who make government a necessity also fills that government and makes it also dangerous and suspect itself.
Therefore, we must always suspect, distrust, supervise, and suspect government. Always. It is in the DNA of America that we tolerate a limited government because people are capable of evil. But those same fallen people (capable of evil) also work in the government and run the government. So we cannot trust the government any more than we would trust a society without a government.
I hate all government. I resent all laws that can’t be easily traced back to the Decalogue. Too much government is vastly worse than too little.
I put my trust in the US Citizen - even though most voted for that idiot in 2008 and 2012 — I think it was still a lower % than what is truly representative of traditional US values...the media is constantly making statements as facts without any backing or foundation and create an atmosphere of delusion....we’ll see in 2014 what happens...

In my experience I would say that Jonathon has this Bass Ackwards.
Liberals are the group that love government - especially the concept of Big Government.
At the least, most conservatives have a natural skepticism about government, especially at the federal level.
I would say that more often our views go far beyond skepticism into healthy suspicion and a total, or an almost total, lack of trust.
When I hear or read any statement from the federal government I expect it to be mostly self-serving olio of lies, half truths and mis-statements. I never expect it to be a good faith effort to tell the truth.
And the government never disappoints.

As if the Fourth Amendment has an exemption for “good folks,” and that tyranny by “good folks” is more acceptable and less ominous than regular tyranny.

Blind hatred of government, or any other human institution, is just as wrong as blind adoration. Human beings are imperfect, whether they are in government or the private sector. While they aren't perfectly good, they generally aren't perfectly bad either. Ronald Reagan said to trust, but verify. He didn't say to hate without question.
