Were it not for the high walls and watchtowers, it could easily be mistaken for a recreational centre or private boarding school.

With its volleyball and basketball courts, and visitors' garden complete with bubbling fountain, Muwaqqer prison, in Jordan, is a world away from the harsh regimes associated with Arab jails.

The comfortable, airy cells of this newly-built facility will be where Abu Qatada, 53, be held after he touches down in Jordan on Sunday after his long-delayed deportation from Britain.

Last week, Britain and Jordan signed an extradition treaty that paved the way for the cleric's departure by guaranteeing that evidence obtained by torture would not be used against him in a Jordanian court.

The Islamist cleric makes the journey accompanied by a Jordanian "welfare team" including a consultant psychiatrist, a pathologist, the head of a human rights group, and a lawyer, said a source with detailed knowledge of the arrangements. The team is all male, respecting his wish that no women be included.

In 1999, Jordanian courts convicted the cleric in his absence of a conspiracy to carry out bombings in Jordan, which resulted in successful attacks on the American School and the Jerusalem Hotel in Amman in 1998.

Initially condemning him to death, his sentence was then reduced to life imprisonment with hard labour.

Should be imprisonment with no instruments to record, save, or transmit the mechinations of his evil mind. Why is summary execution for such crimes not imposed?

additional snip. Whoa!

Western official admitted to The Telegraph that the GID is known to have a “give and take” relationship with hardline Islamists, and that Qatada could be released as part of that approach.

David Cameron was feeling the heat from the real conservatives in the UK about not deporting this guy and now he’s found a place to dump him.

This is a political move to hype up the notion that the leader of the “Conservative Party” is actually conservative.

But as has been noted the trip to Jordan may lead to freedom for this jihadist.
