Actually the dash is not grammatically necessary. It is stylistic and it is better were it there, though.Grammer and style have nothing to do with the dash. It is part of the designation for the aircraft.
For example: the F4D is not the same plane as the F-4D.

Actually, the dash is necessary as it describes correctly the type of jet.
“F-15” is the official type (official name), not “F15.”
