I was living in the Philadelphia area when her husband Senator Heinz was killed in a helicopter crash (in a school yard)... that was a tragic scene.

Actually, Senator Heinz was flying in a twin engine Piper Aerostar. The pilot of the Aerostar had an unsafe gear indication and twice did a flyby of the PHL Tower for the controllers to take a close look. At the same time, a helo owned by Sun Oil, and based at PHL, overheard the conversation between the plane and controllers and offered to take a closer look at the gear.

The helo and plane joined up about 7 miles north of PHL where the helo crew verified the gear looked good, down and in place. This is when the mistake happened. Anxious to get the Senator to the airport and to his meeting, the plane pilot failed to ascertain the position of the helo and turned into the helo. All people on the plane and helo died along with some kids in a school yard. Very tragic.

I saw it all as an air traffic controller in the PHL Tower when it happened.
