Public perception of body modifications is changing. Once upon a time a tattoo was a reliable class marker; that's no longer the case.

I don't have any tats myself and never expect to get one, but I withhold judgment of those who have them. I've known too many good people with ink to do otherwise.

It's no longer the case because tats have become a tribal marker for a generation of bleating conformists whop caved on peer pressure.

The true rebel in the current generation says, "NO THANKS" to ink.

That's MY personal perception when I see tats.

Now Dad -- HE had tats; but he got them when he was drunk and in the Navy back when. He hated them.
