I vote for October. It’s an excellent month. Cooler temperatures, high school, college and pro football in season, the leaves turning to a rainbow of colors, warm apple cider and bit of crispness in the air. And at the end we can all repent and dress up in minstrel black face for Halloween.

The last time I was down that way I bought watermelon straight out of he field...from mexicans.

An uncle of mine works for the Dept. of Agriculture, and many years ago he was inspecting planes for illegal biological materials of all kinds on arriving international flights. One of his co-workers was black. After one flight from somewhere in Africa was cleared, they were discussing how dirty and smelly the people were, and how awful food that they brought with them was. The black guy looked around, and then whispered to my uncle, “I’ll deny ever saying this, but after looking at these people, I thank God that my ancestors were brought here, even in chains...at least I grew up with some cleanliness and eating normal food.”
Personally, I find the idea of special carve-outs for any and every minority to be offensive. We’re all people, and in this country we’re all supposed to be Americans. Melting pot, remember that? This guy was merely being in-your-face about how annoyed he is about one particular carve-out. I congratulate him for his guts, though he could’ve and should’ve left out the watermelons.
