Who's Gearing Up to Boycott Harrison Ford’s 'Ender's Game' Film? [boycott = publicity = more sales]

It's one of the most highly anticipated films of the upcoming holiday movie season, though "Ender's Game" now has a considerable amount of controversy to go with the hype.

Geeks OUT has launched an online protest of the film due to author Orson Scott Card being an outspoken opponent of gay marriage. Called "Skip Ender's Game," the boycott urges potential audiences to steer clear of the film, which is based on Card's popular 1985 novel.

"Do NOT see this movie! Do not buy a ticket at the theater, do not purchase the DVD, do not watch it on-demand," Geeks OUT officials write. "Ignore all merchandise and toys. However much you may have admired his books, keep your money out of Orson Scott Card's pockets."

Geeks OUT is organizing a series of "Skip Ender's Game" events in New York, Orlando, Seattle, and other major U.S. cities to coincide with the movie's debut this November.

Orson Scott Card has been an outspoken opponent of gay rights for several years.

I agree. I had no plans to watch this film, haven’t even heard about it til now. but now I really want to watch it as a protest against the LGBT community.

You should read the books it is based on, Ender’s Game and Ender’s Shadow.

It looks like they will focus on the action and skip a lot of the character development.

If you don’t care about the characters then the action does not mean......

There’s an old, old Hollywood apothegm to the effect that “there’s no such thing as bad publicity.”

Any such boycott will only have the effect of increasing ticket sales.

I’ll buy a ticket.

I do boycott films. Avatar was one. Any movie by Victor Salva is another.

I am definitely going to go see it. If it is decent maybe twice. If It is only okay I will buy a ticket for that one and "accidentally" wander into another one that really doesn't deserve to have numbers boosted.

“Avatar” was a pretty darn good movie. I really liked it and even watch it again now and then.

As we should expect, the article totally misreported Card’s position by calling it “anti-gay rights” when the proper understanding was that Card opposed the illogical construct of “gay marriage.” Card did not advocate for anybody to be put in stocks in the town square nor did he oppose any normal civil rights for same-sex couples. I’ve also not found any instance of Card using his books for any such advocacy within the storyline.

Like several other posters, I enjoyed the book and hope to find the movie does it justice. If it’s good enough, it might also earn a second viewing just to make a point of support for Card’s right to express himself in the public square on any moral matter.

Wiki says he is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and is opposed to sex marriage, but says it since the Supreme Court ruling on DOMA, it will be legal in all 50 states.

I will not watch a movie that coyly makes American military into murderous animals. That was what james Cameron was doing.

I’ve read the book several times. It’s a classic in the genre and truly a classic in any genre. Thats why its suggested reading in the USMC. This is why its been translated into 33 languages.
I admit i would see this if Pelosi wrote it although it’s fortunate she’s incapable of much thought at all.

I never once heard the word "American" in the movie. Oh, well.
