Media Critics Blame 'American People' for CNN Going Tabloid
breitbart.com/Big-Journalism ^ | 7-9-2013 | John Nolte

It looks as though while I was on vacation last week a few media critics were complaining about CNN's decision to cover the Zimmerman trial over the fall of Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi. Fair enough. What I reject, however, are explanations like this one that blame the American people for what is happening to CNN:

[T]he Zimmerman trial will likely be a ratings boon for all cable networks, including MSNBC and Fox News, which have also been heavy on the courtroom coverage. CNN's domestic outfit understands the same way Time Magazine does that most Americans don't know much about world events, and don't care to -- John King even admitted as much last year.

The truth is, CNN's programming decisions aren't a reflection of CNN so much as a reflection of the American people, more of whom care about a domestic court trial than about the historic events taking place overseas. Right now, CNN International is broadcasting wall-to-wall coverage from Egypt. The fact that CNN's domestic channel isn't should tell you what executives there think about the American people's interests.

That is Politico's Dylan Byers, who I am not singling out. He is not alone in his thinking; he just summed it up best.

But this thinking is grossly unfair to The American People.

It’s pure laziness. They’ve chosen to become background, unegaging, like the easy listening radio stations of the 80’s. If told properly and indepth, the struggles of the factions in Egypt could become as engaging as soemthing like Game of Thrones.

Do your work and stop blaming the “American people.”

I think media critic Vladimir Putin has the right attitude toward “journalists”, and the media.

Did it ever occur to CNN’s critics that they’ve always appealed to a lower common denominator of viewers than Fox News? Going tabloid is just the next logical step in the process.

What do they blame the success of “Fox News” on then?

Most people do not tune in CNN, MSNBC, FoxNews, CNBC, HLN, etc., for celebrity news.

However, that is what most of those ‘24-hour news’ channels offer many times.

CNN isn’t the only one. During the Anna Nichole Smith situation and subsequent death, FoxNews carried various ‘FoxNews Alerts’ regarding ANS for at least 28 days in a row. [I kept a running count and turned FoxNews off after the 28th day.]

It used to be that we were inundated with celebrity news on ‘slow news’ days. Now, any day qualifies, as celebrity news trumps real news.

The airplane crash in SF over the weekend had the online blogs and social network sites showing pictures and information a while before the ‘24-hour news’ networks. Many of us use the Internet to get breaking and current news, and we use the cable news channels only for supporting functions. Broadcast network news informs the general low information voters of the current daily talkingpoints.

I turned off CNN, the day that a certain reporter soiled his suit pants, because bombs were going off next to his hotel in Baghdad.

Well, do you love low-information voters cause they actually elect people like Obama, or do you hate them because they are too dense and backward to appreciate your gleaming brilliance? Which is it???

All programming decisions are ultimately made by their advertisers.

Who want manipulable, low-information consumers... who of course are also manipulable low-information voters.

Dylan Byers

The man who apparently cares more about his facial hair than anything else?

Would America like an update on the Zimmerman trial more than one on Egypt? I guess so.

Would America want "wall to wall" coverage of either story? Not likely.

Not for Jodi Arias either, though at least that trial may have had something for the guys out there.

Really? I was unaware that the "American people" made any day-to-day programming decisions for CNN. What is it, a secret voting box on your TV?

No, not even a nice try. Brietbart nails it:

...If you click those links you will find NBC, MSNBC, ABC, Reuters, The New York Times, and numerous other news outlets -- in other words: The Media. And The Media had two goals here: to service their president and to push gun control.

The former was accomplished through deliberate and machinated racial agitation, which compounds the offense. These people are seriously hoping for race riots.

I don’t think the general public demanded the high level of coverage of the Zimmerman trial that we are seeing - that was done in response to the race-baiters. It is more of a media obsession than an obsession of the general public. As for the obsession with celebrities, that is more a function of the mainstream TV networks and magazines than of the cable news networks.

CNN can serve liberal elites if they want to.. they’ll go out of business, but that’s just fine with the rest of us...

I thought the media didn’t cover local crime stories. That was certainly their excuse when the greater Philly government helped cover up an abortionist who routinely murdered small children at his clinic in violation of the law, killed patients, and generally ran a disgusting business of ill repute.
