In a video made with United Kingdom-based human rights group Reprieve, Yasiin Bey, the actor/rapper formerly known as Mos Def, volunteered to have himself force-fed in the same manner as a procedure reportedly used on hunger-striking Guantanamo detainees.
The graphic video, which was posted by the Guardian Monday, was directed by Asif Kapadia and based on a leaked government document outlining the "Standard Operating Procedure" for the "medical management of detainees on hunger strike."

In the video, Bey is restrained while two volunteer doctors lodge a tube up his nostril, where, according to the procedure, it is to be pushed down into the recipient's stomach. After two tries at the procedure, Bey refuses to undergo another attempt, breaking down in tears. He describes the feeling as "burning" and "unbearable."
The video comes with the onset of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting. A court order has been filed on the behalf of four of the Guantanamo detainees to halt the practice for the holiday. Out of about 100 detainees currently on hunger strike, over 40 are reportedly undergoing the force-feeding procedure.
Reprieve approached Bey been about the filming video in order to "humanize the situation," says Cori Crider, Reprieve's strategic director and one of the attorneys who filed the injunction. The group is also sponsoring "Stand Fast For Justice," in which those concerned can pledge hours of hunger striking in solidarity with the prisoners.
