AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas' only officially declared 2014 gubernatorial candidate says he needs $2-plus million to viably compete in the GOP primary.
Former state Republican Party chairman Tom Pauken told reporters Tuesday that he has raised "several hundred thousand dollars" to start. He's still considered a longshot.
Gov. Rick Perry has announced he's not running, clearing the way for longtime Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott to cruise to victory in the Republican primary in March.
Abbott has $18-plus million in campaign funds, but hasn't yet declared his candidacy.
Pauken said Abbott wasn't a true conservative and that the governorship shouldn't be decided by "divine right" or "which Republican you chose to move up the ladder."
He added that Abbott got huge donations from law firms who will want favors from the governor's mansion.

I recall a Freeper making that comment earlier. Well, I anticipate to hear Rove's operatives to issue their respnse in defense of Abott real soon.
Pauken is a PUKE. I wish he would move to Chicago.
Your man Pauken is gonna spend a bunch of money to end up like Dewhurst.
How’s Greg ‘Big Money’ Abbott really a conservative if liberal Democrat multi-millionaire donors are bankrolling his campaign war chest? Just wondering.
Texans could try to learn more about Pauken. If you’re in Texas you could probably go to one of his speeches. Just check out his campaign Website for his schedule. And if you feel so strongly against him, I’m sure you could ask him a few questions. And if after confronting him, you still think Pauken is a “puke” I might not agree with you, but I would at least respect you for confronting him in person.
If the election was today, I would lean Abbott. It is going to take something more than mudslinging to shift my vote. Looks like Pauken is off to a weak start.
Then go and meet him in person. Ask him some questions? One thing I know about Mr. Pauken is that he’s not afraid to answer some tough questions.
Well, hey, Mr. Pauken spokesman, have HIM come HERE. Let’s talk.
Can you afford a plane ticket to China? I’m not his spokesman. But his Website provides contact info. so you can contact his spokesman. If indeed you ever come to China, sure let’s have a talk. Perhaps, we can talk about why so many wealthy Democrats donate to Abbott’s campaign. Or maybe Rove’s involvement with the Abbott campaign. Look forward to meeting you face-to-face.
His first book The Thirty Year War: The Politics of the Sixties Generation(1995) is still worth a read. It was a great companion to David Horowitz’s Prodigal Son. It got me off my butt.
Haven’t read the more recent one, Bringing American Home: How America Lost Her Way and How We Can Find Our Way Back (2010). Now I will.
For governor, can’t say yet. But he’s a real asset to conservatives.
Thanks for your post, I was beginning to think I was the lone Freeper who is a Pauken supporter. It’s eerie how so many are supporting Abbott without taking a closer look at other GOP gubernatorial candidates. Sort of reminds me of the Obama 2008 ‘Hope and Change’ campaign. Americans knew very little about Obama but they loved him anyways. It’s like the ‘Chris Matthews Syndrome-in-reverse.’ Say the name Aboott, and Texans start getting tingling feelings. One might consider that a ‘cult of personality.’
