DENVER (CBS4)- The taxes on recreational marijuana might go a lot higher than first thought. Smokers buying at shops in Denver may pay up to 35 percent in taxes.
Colorado voters will be asked to approve two state taxes totaling 25 percent on all retail marijuana sales in the November election. They may be asked to approve an additional city tax for Denver.
Denver Mayor Michael Hancock wants to add an additional five to 10 percent city tax on top of that.
Hancock said the money is needed to pay the costs of regulating the drug.
Critics complain severe taxes would destroy a new industry already approved by voters.
The Denver City Council has until August to decide if the tax question will go on the November ballot.
State tax amounts of 15 and 10 percent also need approval from voters.
The legal dope is okay, and it should be taxed, but this looks like they are trying to cover up their other shortcomings and chicanery with exorbitant taxes.
Wait until the AT(&M)F starts raiding peoples’ homes for tax avoidance.
Wonder how many will be prosecuted for growing and selling their own pot cheaper than the state?
Well revenue generation was one of their selling points for legalization.
Dude,that’s so bogus
Dope sales will go back underground.
Is this the fair play for dope dealer act?
the fines and sentences will probably be higher and longer than before it was legalized
Already ready gotta pay taxes on my munchies, doritos,ho hos, man, what a bummer;)
They should look at the 2200% increase on the federal tax on loose cigarette tobacco in 2009. Now they’re trying to close the pipe tobacco “loophole”.
Apparently Denver’s dopey Mayor does not realize that a bunch of stoners are going to be cruising around on his streets on their way to the suburbs to save some dough on their next weed buy.
Twinkies coming back soon, may have to give up the weed.
Yep— wants the gumbint starts to tax it, theyll start to tinker with it. How many self-respecting heads would trust Government Weed? (TOO much paranoia)
Yep. Sounds like a ploy to keep the illegal market and supply chains running just fine - to avoid the exorbitant taxes. Standard reason why black markets exist - when taxes become excessive, or the product is illegal.
We can grow pot, but it’s more complicated to grow tobacco.
This is Denver. Not Libertarian, Democrats. Lots of Democrats. The folks who give us Diana DeGette. The Denver city council wants to put it on the ballot in Denver. Did you read the article you posted?
Oops, the article states the state is also trying to put it on the ballot. Apologies for my misread.
“Critics complain severe taxes would destroy a new industry already approved by voters”
And yet these are the same loons that want to ban the 70 year old process of fracking and destroy the oil industry.
Still. Maybe dope makes you feel better while you’re freezing in the dark.
