"she took this opportunity to separate Zimmerman from his attorneys and stand with him (a Hispanic) over his defense."

I think it's a little different. I think she wanted to embarrass Zimmerman in front of the jury in order to point out to the jury that those who don't testify are often hiding their own guilt. The jury could not possibly have missed this exchange. Also, by springing it on him, with no warning, his lawyers had no chance to prepare him for it. It is not a common thing to happen, and the lawyers are supposed to be in a position to always be able to speak for their client.

After watching this trial all day, I don't remember if the Judge made her inquiry of GZ re: his testimony in front of the jury or not.

I don't think she did [I think the jury was out at that time]...leaving the jury to form their own opinions about the absence of his testimony.

The jury was not present when she asked GZ the first time before the defense had finished it’s case.

IANAL, but that sure smells like jury tampering to me.

Great theory, except the jury was out, so they possibly missed it.
