AKRON, Colo. (CBS4) – There’s a growing effort to create a 51st state out of parts of northeast Colorado.

Ten counties, including Weld and Morgan, started talking about seceding last month. Now some people Lincoln and Cheyenne counties say they want to join a new state they’d call “North Colorado.”

Organizers of the secession effort say their interests are not being represented at the state Capitol. Representatives from the 10 counties held a meeting on Monday in the town of Akron in Weld County to begin mapping the boundaries for the new state they say will represent the interests of rural Colorado.

Very interesting indeed, but I’ll say this. Even if we captured the senate in 2014, this would not get the nod from enough of the other states.

These efforts don’t impress me. It’s tantamount to withdrawing into a smaller and smaller enclave, rather than standing and fighting and wrestling our entire state or nation back from the barbarians.

Bad Idea. More folks from California will just move there, and we’ll have more Dem Senators.

I should research this thoroughly but IIRC creating...and admitting...a new state is a long, complicated process that requires both Congressional approval and the approval of a percentage of state legislatures as well.If I'm correct this isn't necessarily a done deal...even if the folks of “North Colorado” support it.

The one way to destroy the federal government would be for every county or county equivalent in the nation to become a state.

Doing so would establish 3143 states and require a US Senate with 6286 US Senators.

With a Senate that big, nothing would get done and the federal government would cease to function.

Look at the demographics and how FUBAR everything is in this country is.

We lost.

Separation is the only option right now.

But screw forming new states, Liberals will just move there when they F*up their areas like they are doing to Texas, we need areas forming their own countries so we can keep them out.

These counties should join other counties in a straight line to the Pacific and form the Country of Jefferson.

After we separate, then we can work on taking back lost areas.

New York State has 52 counties that should secede from New York City and Albany.

It would be called the State of Liberty.

Cuomo, Bloomberg et alii have gang-bang raped the Lady of Liberty.

In NY you basically have half a dozen counties running the entire state.

Then make the state have a constitution that states that you CANNOT be a liberal or Dem in order to be a resident of the state. Make it as rightwing as possible as the this is old news: the reason why they are seceding is because they stated the liberals in the major cities have usurped their voices.

DISAGREE!! It's outside the box, bold and creative. It's not withdrawing at all. It sends a powerful signal across the entire nation as well.

US Constitution, Article IV, Section 3

Section. 3.

New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new State shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or Parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress.

Exactly. Look at the demographics.

60 percent of Obama’s margin of victory in the PV came from just two counties. Cook + LA county.

As for this, why not simply merge with Wyoming?

We need a mechanism for diluting the voting power of metropolitan population centers. Some kind of voter to area correlation on vote tallys.

Secession is one such mechanism. They can have their urban socialist utopia and we can have our compounds. They live by their rules, we live by ours.

Its the same here in Ohio. We have 88 counties - McCain carried 67 of them in 2008 - and the 3 biggies, along with a few scattered smaller ones gave us obama. Something needs to be done about the urban areas controlling every state. The electoral vote needs to be overhauled. Of course, the Dems would never go for that, but one can dream - right?

It's not quite that hard. The Colorado legislature has to approve the partition. And a majority vote in both houses of Congress is needed to approve partition and then to admit the state.

Through a vote of the body calling itself the Virginia legislature and which was recognized by Congress as such, and a majority vote in both the House and the Senate. Since the rest of the Virginia legislature was off rebelling it was actually pretty easy.

In this case? Just Colorado's since all the counties are in that state. If counties in Kansas or Nebraska also wanted to be part of the new state then the legislatures of those states would get involved. It's in Article IV, Section 3 of the Constitution.

I think you're missing a word. Article IV, Section 3 reads: "New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union; but no new States shall be formed or erected within the Jurisdiction of any other State; nor any State be formed by the Junction of two or more States, or parts of States, without the Consent of the Legislatures of the States concerned as well as of the Congress."

Legislatures of the States concerned is the operative phrase. If the new state is created from a single state, as in this case, the the only legislature concerned is Colorado's and all the other state legislatutures have no say. If two states combine into a single state, the both the existing legislatures are concerned and need to approve it. The other states indicate their approval or disapproval only through a vote in the House and Senate.
