Low-wage workers to strike at Smithsonian museums
Washington Post ^ | 7/11/2013

Low-wage workers connected with the nation’s marquee museum network will strike on Thursday, continuing a string of recent demonstrations to promote better pay for employees at federal buildings.

Good Jobs Nation, a group representing low-wage workers employed under federal concession agreements, has organized protests throughout the morning in front of several Smithsonian museums.

Those events are scheduled to start at 10 a.m. with a press conference and a street-theater sketch near the Air and Space Museum, where actors playing Ronald McDonald and Uncle Sam will climb into bed together. That performance is meant to represent the relationship between private-sector CEOs and the federal government.

The group plans to move next to the Smithsonian Castle, where protesters are expected to demand that President Obama take action to guarantee a “living wage” for workers employed at federal facilities.

Yeah, ok. Pay the workers at the Smithstonian cafe $25 an hour. So, rather than $2.00 for a soda and $7.00 for a burger (IIRC), they'll charge $5.00 for a soda and $27 for a burger.

Makes sense to me.

So what is low pay in this case?

Seems like an important part of the story is missing.

Fire every last one of them. Unskilled job and will all be filled within 24 hours.

“Fire every last one of them. Unskilled job and will all be filled within 24 hours.”

This scene already has, or shortly will, play out in 95% of jobs in this country. We are racing downwards in standard of living to meet the rising standards of Red China and India; there has to be another answer than that.

In the meantime, don’t expect to see many American babies born, or first-time homebuyers (or buyers of much at all).

This but the next phase of the project to begin wage inflation in the face of unemployment. There must be the wage component to the general inflation

To reduce the debt, there must be continued inflation at a level that is tolerated

Cloward-Piven, Soros, Holder Justice Department, and our tax dollars most likely at work with this new “organization” I’ll bet.

My first thought was contract it out to private companies, but then I remembered that the airrport concession contracts have been a source of mayoral retirement funds here in Atlanta for 40 years.

They are already contracted out.

That is the problem. Even with a good degree at a good school, BS in MIS, it's really freaking hard to find anything now. Those bashing these guys are whistling past the graveyard. We're all gonna be fighting for these low level jobs and can't even get that. Even without amnesty the low level stuff is gone. Good luck at any level unless you're already wealthy.

That's just how it is in this depression obama economy.

What tells me these people haven’t got any brains is the fact that they’re demanding higher wages rather than demanding the government put our money back on tangible assets. It doesn’t make a difference how much you’re paid when big brother can just inflate it to worthlessness.

If you read as far as the second paragraph of the story then you would see that they are employed by a private firm contracted out by the Smithsonian to handle things like concessions and gift shops.

Reading further, the allegation is that the vendor is paying less than the minimum wage and not paying overtime that is accrued. I think that it's fair to insist that the Smithsonian investigate, which they seem to be doing. And if those complaints are true then the Smithsonian should cancel the contract and award it to another company that isn't going to rob its employees.

The braubs behind this scheme are the usual suspects trying to destroy our country, and the low level workers are the useful idiots who follow like sheep to the slaughter.

Alternatively, the American general standard of living rose beyond the level of sustainability.

The conditions that permitted the rise changed. The destruction of WWII combatants was rebuilt and the American pre-rebuilding dissipated. With a more level field of play, competition became a force to be reckoned with.

How that competition will be met is now being sorted out.

Museum guards and a living wage is a political matter much the same as Walmart in DC. The radical black community does not understand the ultimate forces in play.

The best lunch on the Mall is in the basement of the National Gallery. The fare is varied and the sandwiches are superb.

Pricey? perhaps but when compared to Subway lettuce sandwiches, reasonable.

I don’t know about that. I hired a guy with an MBA a few months ago. He does a decent job of driving the forklift and cleaning up the job site.
