Chapman: Pols miss the point on concealed carry
Chicago Tribune ^ | 11 july 2013 | Steve Chapman

The headline on last Sunday's Chicago Tribune was stark and arresting: "A thousand shootings." That's what Chicago experienced in the first six months of 2013. It works out to more than five a day.

So what crime issue got Gov. Pat Quinn worked up last week? The danger posed by Illinoisans holding state permits to carry concealed firearms. "My foremost duty as governor is to keep the people of Illinois safe," he said in issuing an amendatory veto of a bill to legalize concealed carry in the last state without it.

His changes included a ban on carrying guns in establishments that serve alcohol and limiting each carrier to one gun with a magazine holding a maximum of 10 rounds. But in the end they didn't matter, because the General Assembly overrode his veto. The new law sets up a system obliging the state to issue licenses to registered gun owners who pass a background check, undergo 16 hours of safety training and pay a fee.

Quinn responded: "Following a weekend of horrific violence in Chicago in which at least 70 people were shot and 12 killed, this was the wrong move for public safety in Illinois." But of those 70 shootings — or the 1,000-plus shootings that preceded them this year — it's safe to wager that few if any involved legal weapons used by individuals legally entitled to own them.

It's exceptionally rare for a previously law-abiding person to take a legally purchased firearm, load it, walk out the door and shoot someone. But that's the specter that dominates the mind of Quinn when the subject of concealed-carry comes up. It also preoccupies Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

Gov Quinn is an idiot, a political agenda driven idiot. In a state with one of the most violent and dangerous cities in the country his “solution” for keeping residents safe? Try to deny them the means of effectively protecting themselves. By what twisted logic does this make sense? It doesn’t, because statistics and brutal bloody experience show that violent crime is inversely correlated to private firearms ownership. Here is a hint for the good citizens of Illinois: it is apparent Quinn cares more about political agendas (which also happen to be anti freedom and liberty) than he does about you and your safety. Act accordingly next time you vote.

What does one expect when the very purpose of “gun free zones” is the denigration of the tool that brought freedom and liberty to the US, and should stand as the only tool able to protect us from the perpetrators of “gun free zones”.

He is not really an idiot. It is just that his assumptions about reality are false.

It is very difficult to reach correct conclusions when you start with false assumptions.

That is the position most “progressives” find themselves in today. Most adults simply cannot change their basic assumptions about reality. They will do anything to avoid having to do so.

The RATS are scared to death that law-abiding citizens, with legal firearms, are going to start culling the RAT voter rolls in self-defense!

Good Grief!!!

Doesn’t ANYBODY get it by now??

The administration is lead by and caters to THE CRIMINAL ELEMENT. Their support is always sought in elections.

Who do you think he means when he says “THE PEOPLE” and who do you think he wants to “keep safe” by keeping the general public disarmed??

Get real, folks.

The real reasons that Gov. Quinn and Mayor Rahm Emanuel oppose CCW is they're afraid that their thug constituents are going to get killed by the honest citizens. Thereby the bribes, kickbacks, and protection money is reduced to line their pockets. Besides, killing off the feral scum might actually put a REAL dent in violent crime and that's what is unacceptable to them. The more violent Chicago becomes, the more need for “gun control”.

Progressives tend to see the world the way they wish it was.

Conservatives tend to see the world the way it really is.
