Sir Elton John says Pope Francis is ‘a miracle of humility’
Catholic Herald ^ | Wednesday, 10 July 2013 | Mary Katherine Haley

The Italian edition of Vanity Fair has named Pope Francis as its Man of the Year with the backing of singer Sir Elton John.

The magazine features Pope Francis on the cover of its new issue and says that Francis has done enough in his first 100 days as Pope to be put at the top of the list of world leaders who make history.

In an accompanying tribute, Sir Elton writes: “Francis is a miracle of humility in an era of vanity.”

He says he hopes that Pope Francis’s message would extend to communities who desperately need his love, including gay people and the children, women and men who live with HIV and Aids and are often alone and hidden by silence.

“[Pope Francis’s] beacon of hope will bring more light than any advancement of science, because no drug has the power of love,” Sir Elton said.

I thought “Sir” was supposed to be reserved for men of honor.

I'm not Catholic, but I am a vy devout Christian...and I like this Pope.

May God change Elton John's heart so that he will see the Lord first and foremost...and weld his zipper up.

The Lord loves even Elton...and I pray that he (Elton) will change.

Nicely said. If such a worldly guy as Elton can see Christ’s love through the pope; it’s a reminder that there is hope for all. I’m sure we all know family members and friends who we’ve been praying for for years without any discernible results. Keep the faith and keep praying.

You knew it was coming ...

and the children, women and men who live with HIV and Aids and are often alone and hidden by silence.

Alone? How can they be alone when every twisted twit on every stage from Bangor to Bangkok is lamenting over them? Hidden by silence? Nobody has shut up about HIV and AIDS for 20 years now.

Spare me the boo-hoos.

In spite of his... orientation... I like Elton John. He played at Rush’s wedding, and basically told the “outraged” libs to go pound sand. He knows the Pope is never going to condone his lifestyle, yet he lauds him anyway.

Elton has things backwards. The Pope like all Christians pray for Elton and people like him, but it doesn't mean they condone that lifestyle.

Hate the sin but love and pray for the sinner.

Does Sir Elton ask himself whether or not Francis recognizes his (ahem) “marriage”?

I like your response here.

Pope Francis says God wants shepherds who even bear the smell of the sheep. I'm seeing what he means. He's going after the lost-lost-lost, and for that, people will criticize him: "Doesn't he know what manner of man Elton John is, and that he is a sinner?"

Exactly.

He may be a sinner who is gradually realizing that the Shepherd is looking for him. He's looking up like he's heard the voice.

The Pope has been talking about that for years, and specifically referred to the campaign for homosexual marriage in Argentina as inspired by the devil. That quotation was all over the Internet when he was elected. Elton may have read this, hence the "even gay people" line. I'm glad Francis's character has jolted him awake. Maybe better things will follow. Oremus.
