What about Martin's right to 'stand his ground?' (Here we go!)
CNN ^ | July 11, 2013 | Miller Francis

Posted on 07/11/2013 8:15:25 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Like many people, I've been riveted by the George Zimmerman trial. I call it "the George Zimmerman trial" because that's what it is, but the more I watch, the more I wonder: Should it be renamed "the Trayvon Martin trial?"

I'm not just talking about some of the media's tabloid-like focus on Martin's background, his personal history, his school records and -- outside the courtroom -- the toxicology report. I'm talking about an aspect of the case that never comes up in the media coverage, one that I would argue is key.

This murder trial, in and out of the courtroom, has been boiled down to one question: Was Zimmerman in fear for his life and thus justified in defending himself by shooting and killing Martin?

It has been framed this way -- in terms of Zimmerman's mortal fear -- since the shooting in 2012.

Some people have forgotten that Zimmerman was not even arrested initially. It took more than a month for the special prosecutor to bring the second-degree murder charge. And if not for mass protests across the country, he might not be the defendant in a murder trial at all.

The question that has not surfaced in the courtroom -- the elephant in the room -- is this: Did Martin fear for his life after being followed and confronted by a stranger while going to the store to buy candy and a soft drink? Was he, Martin, justified in standing his ground and defending himself when this stranger, an apparent stalker, approached him in a threatening manner?

Zimmerman didn't identify himself and never said he was part of the neighborhood watch group.....

If Martin had “stood his ground” he’d have died of old age.

Probably not. His liver was already badly damaged by drugs.

Yes, Francis. Because stalkers always call the police for help and get into bloody fights and avoid shooting until they fear for their life.

Where did Trayvon get the right to punch Mr. Zimmerman in the nose?

Why didn’t Trayvon get off the phone with his “girlfrien’” and call the police about this “creepy ass cracker”?

Martin if he chose to stand his ground had NO reason to smash Zimmerman in the face or pound his head into the cement. George had done NOTHING to him at that point except to be in ZIMMERMAN”S OWN neighborhood

Trayvon didn’t know the number for 911.

If Martin was frightened or concerned about being followed, Martin could have dialed 911. Zimmerman did.

I agree. Instead he called his girlfriend so he could trash talk about the white azz cracker.

Note to the terminally befuddled:

“a person is justified in the use of deadly force” if “(1) He or she reasonably believes that such force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another or to prevent the imminent commission of a forcible felony”

For instance: a single mother home alone with a child is justified in shooting an intruder whether or not he has a firearm -or a bag of skittles. The reality is; if he is so unaware that he breaks into a strangers house (or sneaks up on someone then sucker-punches them jumps on them when they are down and tells them they are going to die), then too right they have only themselves to blame when someone does indeed fear for their life and shoots them.

Even in the Martial Arts the first thing they tell you is that if you feel yourself and in particular your life is in danger -run away!

If the Martin thug felt 'threatened', he could have easily run -or not be acting oddly in an area he clearly had no business skulking about in. The single mother is indeed justified in shooting the idiot thug.

Just as Zimmerman was.

If Martin had “stood his ground” he wouldn’t have been in contact with Zimmerman. Instead, the police would have contacted Martin. And cowardly thug that he was, he wouldn’t have tried to punch an officer in the nose and straddle him, ground and pound, and tell him he was going to die.

Francis - Why is this ‘child’ roaming the streets by himself in the rain late on a Sunday night? And then jumps on an adult to the ground and smashes his head in. Anger problem and it’s no wonder his mother had to ship him off to the father. And, he had no control over him either. The parents should have ‘stood their ground’ and been firm in raising him. But the family was broken and the rest is history.

Wasn’t he close to his daddy’s home? Why didn’t he call his papa if he was scared?

What they miss is that conservatives have functional brains. We can do our jobs and watch BOTH issues.

Another good question, indeed.

I grew up on the wrong side of the tracks, and certain things you learned very quickly if you wished to survive. First, dinna be mucking about in places you've no business being in at all, at all. Secondly, if you look closely you'll be seeing that the Good Lord gave you a perfectly useable pair of legs to be running about with if you've a mind to -use em! Run! Thirdly, only a bloody fool confronts a perfect stranger and assaults him with no care for the possible ramifications of said action, and we who hear about it later can only shake our heads in response to such idiocy and the predictable results -of course, no sympathy for the fool who got shot because of it.
