LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) After just two weeks in office, Mayor Eric Garcetti has waded into the debate over a potential sale of the Los Angeles Times.
In an interview recorded on Wednesday, Garcetti told the Huffington Posts Jacob Soboroff he remains opposed to a bid by billionaire businessmen David and Charles Koch to buy the Times, which has the fourth-highest daily circulation in the U.S.
Id rather see local ownership, Garcetti said. Outside of them specifically, I think HuffPo should buy the L.A. Times.
Arianna, you heard the Mayor, Soboroff replied, in reference to Arianna Huffington, the Posts chair, president, and editor-in-chief.
The interview apparently marked the first time Garcetti has voiced his position on the rumored sale, which has been the target of strong opposition from local union leaders who say the Koch brothers will bring radical, right-wing extremism to the news outlet.
Garcetti was elected the 42nd mayor of Los Angeles in May after a contentious campaign against former City Controller Wendy Greuel.
Garcetti genuinely desire the media to be a mere shill for government.
Typical Statist.
Heck yeah, all the reporters could work for free!
I wish that huffpo would ‘buy the farm’.
lol
So he is in effect asking the Tribune Company to take a big hit to its bottom line by selling the LA Times for less than the market is offering, just to keep it a money losing left wing rag?
While I hope the Koch brothers buy it and the Chicago Tribune, I also hope that they create their own journalism school, because the current crop of university journalism students aren’t worth diddly.
If they want to make money on those papers, they are going to need capable reporter, journalists, and editors. Not the usual crop of prejudiced, press release and wire service publishing leftist losers.
Cause AOLTimeWarner wants to lose money EVEN FASTER!
It is the Al Gore solution!
If HuffPost buys the LATimes, how will the readers be able to detect the “change?”
This is one time I wish an entity would say damn the cost, removing this from the Leftist column is a win.
The fact that HufPo will be the party posting losses from here on out...
High fives to that!
Anybody tell him Huffpo is also broke?
ha ha!
the LATimes built up almost a monopoly franchise... in the second-largest media market in America.
And then they pissed it all down the toilet by
putting their editorial slant
into almost all their “news” stories.
If LAT had a decently competent editor who understood journalism, it could make a fortune (as the number one media outlet in a region of some 20 million people).
I agree, and it really doesn’t require you swear off providing Leftist information along side Conservative information.
There was a guy named Robert Scheer who used to write editorials the Times would print. This guy was so fringe he would fall of the Left hand side of the chart in any reasoned categorization.
I may have seen one possibly two times I agreed with him. Generally I saw him as a consummate fringe flake nut-job. I wasn’t the only one either.
Even middle of the roaders would be offended by this guy if they were open and savvy at all.
Paul Conrad the editorial cartoonist was just as bad. He had a gift for his drawings, but the man was unhinged.
The very day Nixon was burried, he posted a scathing attack cartoon. The venom in that man know no bounds. He once attacked Reagan using the Large Christ image from Brazil (I think it is).
At any rate, I used to want access to news, and took the times. I was so furious I cancelled it once, and actually starting it up again after about a decade. Shortly thereafter I cancelled and never looked back.
I don’t need to be supporting that kind of anti-American values fish-wrap.
I was raised watching Superman, and as stilly as it is, I still try to live by truth, justice, and the American way.
The Los Angeles Times is about as 180 degrees opposite of that as it can be.
It’s an enemy of people like you and I. It doesn’t agree with our work ethic. It doesn’t agree with our family values. It doesn’t agree with our religious aspirations. It disagrees with us on law and order. It disagrees with us whether it’s a good idea to terminate one million fetuses per year. It disagrees with our government, as long as our government projects a strong image overseas. It also hates citizens in that it hawks illegal immigrant rights at the loss of our own.
The LA Times is an enemy of everything our Founding Fathers respected.
