One suspects a big lie, here.

Interns don't correspond with news agencies.

Interns don't confirm names.

Interns photocopy.

Why are these names “racist”? They are just joke names, made possible by the fact that Asian-sounding names lend themselves to this kind of humorous manipulation. These joke names are not slurs against Asians.

It was probably a joke going around the NTSB and the intern probably thought the TV station knew about the joke.

The thing I don’t get is why this is racist. Sure, it makes fun of the way a language sounds, but is it really racist?

...and even though he did say it was racist, I first heard about this from a friend of Chinese ancestry because he thought it was funny.

Yeah no kidding. It’s one thing to try a prank. Quite another when you pull it off and it gets read outloud to an audience of millions.

I agree - there is no racism here. It is a play on words. I am sure that the intern never thought in a thousand years that this would get past the first recipient at KTVU.

Too bad the card reader at KTVU wasn't quicker on her feet. She could have made a joke about this being a Ron Burgundy moment and she just got 'punked'.

"This intern is a legend now."

He's obviously bright and creative enough that he probably learned more than he ever wanted to know about working for the gov't in his first week. Now he gets to spend the rest of the summer at the beach, and returns to his college, tanned, rested and a legend!

I've had much worse summers in college, myself.

What Imbeciles! Did you see the news reader announcing the correction/apology? She called the airline “Ahhseeyana” not “Aysheeana”

Has someone come up with a new way to pronounce Asian? These idiots shape our perceptions of the world.

How is it racist? It’s funny but I don’t see how it’s racist.

BTW, everyone who looked at those names and didn’t pick up on this prank are complete idiots.

Words cannot adequately express the outrage we ... feel over KTVU’s on-air blunder that made a mockery of the Asiana Airlines tragedy and offended so many loyal viewers of the San Francisco Bay Area station.

Minor point, but I hate the "words cannot adequately express" or "there are no words to express my anger/disgust/etc." or whatever. There are about a quarter million words in the English language. Pick a few that work for you. You're angry. Ticked. Mad. Shocked and dismayed. Whatever. English is a big fluid language. And if it's really that tough, make up a new word. You're supermegatickedoff.

Millions? I doubt that.... Maybe thousands.

One time they said the aircraft was upside down.

If you've seen the video you can understand why there were some early reports of it being upside down.

It didn't miss flipping by much, it stood on it's nose and wingtip for an achingly long time. That it didn't beak into multiple pieces when it slammed back down is a tribute to the design and manufacture!

If Hollyweird had done this, it wouldn’t have been “rasis”. It would have been funny and the movie would be cleaning up at the box office with low information ‘RAT voters there laughing their @$$e$ off.
