The US Embassy in Egypt denied Saturday that US naval vessels near Egypt's shores are sent in preparation for military action.

A top Marine Corps general said Thursday that two US marine vessels approached Egypt's Red Sea shore, raising concerns in the Egyptian media about an imminent military move.

"We deny false claims in the Egyptian press that US naval ships are in the vicinity of the Arabian Peninsula and the Suez Canal to militarily invade Egypt," read a statement issued on the US embassy's website.

The statement went on to say that the United States regularly deploys forces near the Arabian Peninsula and that US vessels regularly pass through Egypt's Suez Canal en route to the Indian Ocean or the Mediterranean Sea.

Clearly the Obama administration is not planning to use the military, as that requires an act of congress. It would violate the Constitution and the war powers act, and he would never ignore the constitution.

...Thu, 11 Jul, 2013...

...Two U.S. Navy ships patrolling in the Middle East moved closer to Egypt’s Red Sea coast in recent days, the top Marine Corps general said on Thursday, in what appeared to be a precautionary move after the military overthrow of President Mohamed Mursi.

The United States often sends Navy vessels close to countries in turmoil in case it needs to protect or evacuate U.S. citizens or take part in humanitarian assistance. Their presence does not necessarily mean the United States is preparing to carry out military action...

...the USS San Antonio, an amphibious transport dock, and the USS Kearsarge, an amphibious assault ship, had moved further north in the Red Sea two or three nights ago to better respond if needed.

U.S. Marine Corps officials said moving amphibious ships closer to shore would enable easier movement of helicopters and other equipment, if it were needed.

“Why? Because we don’t know what’s going to happen,” he said.

Navy officials said the third ship in the group, the USS Carter Hall, remained off the coast of Bahrain in the Gulf...

Amphibious transport/assault ships are not just for landing invading troops; they are very useful for humanitarian support and evacuation missions.

Yeah, and it’s ONE ship, not all that big compared to an aircraft carrier.

The Kearsarge seems to attract hysterical commentary. A few weeks ago it was going to attack someone in Syria, or overthrow the King of Jordan, or something...

If I were in the military, this is one case where I would willfully disobey orders. Fighting for the Brotherhood? Yeah, right.

What would the “point” of military intervention be? They’ve got nothing we want and have done nothing to warrant our attacking them.

Methinks someone over there just wants to feel as important as an Iraqi or Afghani. LOL.

Anyone a fan of No Reservations? It's a foodie show where Anthony Bourdain, a food critic, travels the world sampling the local cuisine. Anyway, there's a show in which Bourdain and all his crew become stranded in Beirut when war broke out. They hid in their hotel until evacuated by US Marines to a Landing Craft anchored offshore.
