“”””If some black drunk called you a weird ass cracker, are you going to jump up and physically attacked them?”””

My wife called me stupid and slow one time. I didn’t kick her ass, I just laughed. Some people need to chill out.

Whatever the drunk guy’s medical condition, isn’t his girlfriend right there to tell them who he is and where he works?

Kind of bizarre that there’d be the Goldman confusion two days into this.

When I was real young, I thought I was bullet proof and would roll in the mud with the best of them, for really stupid stuff, like name calling....Then ya eventually grow up and get smart...

“Once you call an American African the “N” word, he feels he is now justified to kill you.”

Yeah, it’s like waiving a pork sandwich in front of a Mooslim!

I wouldn’t call a black guy the n word after getting help from him and not expect to have a punch thrown at me. The same reason I wouldn’t insult a white southerner without expecting the same thing. I wouldn’t call an Italian-looking or Irish-looking guy in NYC a derogatory word without expecting some sort of violent behavior in return. In all cases, I’d deserve to have a punch thrown at me. In short, I don’t feel very sorry for the drunk who got his lights punched out.

The black guy could have refused any further help, but assaulting the guy in question was wrong. Society does not progress by responding to insults with violence.

If this is the same story I read about earlier, the drunk ended up with a fractured skull.

And now we have the rest of the story. When I first read this the only information was about the N word and the guy getting knocked out. I would say justice was had.

I'm the same. There are fighting words, and even if I'm smashed I expect if I call someone a n*****, he's going to hit me. I would deserve it. It's just plain logic. Maybe the difference between knowledge and experience.

The cheerleading for the beatdown administered by the black guy starts almost at the top. Multiple pats on the back within the first 10 posts.

Freepers can surprise you. In a bad way.

You may be so far removed from contemporary society that you fail to see what it’s become.

Many of us who deal in it every day would welcome a return to the values of 50 years ago.

Your islam metaphor failed.

Welcome to the religion of race...

To: ClearCase_guy; All

Here are a couple of my posts from yesterday...I don’t see how anyone could have a problem with this. BTW: I don’t care about the race of either of the guys my feelings still stand.

I despise loudmouths.

I despise drunks.

I despise the combination of the two even more.

While I don’t think the guy deserves being on a respirator with possible brain damage for his ignorance, I also don’t believe that was the intent of the person who hit him.

I originally commented that “the guy got what he deserved”, I will amend that to say that both words and actions have consequences and being a loudmouth drunk can result in being punched. My understanding was that the punch was the end result of the last comment the drunk made, but that there were more comments before.

I can see someone being fed up to the point of action after listening to long rant, and just taking a swing. Is it the legal thing to do...No, is it the right thing to do...Probably not. But I go back to my previous statement, words and actions have consequences. If the guy had kept his mouth shut this wouldn’t have happened, if the other guy had walked away, this wouldn’t have happened. As it is, the guy mouthed off and got a deserved punch, the guy that did the punching got a deserved arrest.

http://www.law.cornell.edu/wex/fighting_words

FIGHTING WORDS

Words which would likely make the person whom they are addressed commit an act of violence. Fighting words are a category of speech that is unprotected by the First Amendment. Chaplinsky v New Hampshire, 315 U.S. 568 (1942).

Definition from Nolo’s Plain-English Law Dictionary

Inflammatory words that are either injurious by themselves or might cause the hearer to immediately retaliate or breach the peace. Use of such words is not necessarily protected “free speech” under the First Amendment. If the hearer is prosecuted for assault, claiming fighting words may establish mitigating circumstances.

Definition provided by Nolo’s Plain-English Law Dictionary

We used to be a much more polite society in the days when a derogatory insult was grounds for a punch in the nose.

It used to be grounds for pistols at dawn
