As a former National Guardsman, with lots of riot control experience, as well as combat experience, I must take issue with your remarks.
Concerning no issue of ammunition, NG troopers have been known to bring their own. The political powers-that-be might want to send men into a free-fire zone virtually unarmed, but Guardsmen are not stupid.
Concerning your hypothetical “well organized very large group” “laying waste to them” I would remind you that many, if not most, combat arms NG units are veterans of deployments to combat zones. The civilian political leaders may be corrupt and inefficient but the NG Infantry, Armor, and MP battalions are experienced and very well organized indeed.
Do not make enemies of your neighbors and potential friends and allies.

The Bonus Marchers were dispersed and their camp broken up by the Regular Army, not the National Guard.
If the “trayvon protestors”, who include many Marxists and anarchists, as can be inferred from the images of their posters and banners, become as much a threat to civil order as the Bonus Marchers were in 1932, I would expect the local, state and national governments to disperse them also. Were not the “Occupy” camps eventually broken up? Do you have a problem with that?
The real lesson to be learned from this video, which appears to have been taken by someone in the crowd of “protestors”, is that a very few trained police, in a very thin line, managed to stop and hold back a much larger crowd.
