What happens if GZ goes and tries to purchase another gun? Is there any legal reason he can’t? And if there isn’t and they don’t permit it, what recourse does he have?
Nothing keeping him from buying another gun. What’s to stop him?

Then the DOJ likely would be acting unethically and probably illegally.
And besides, Zimmerman can buy guns privately without any NICS background check.
How does the DOJ stop him from buying a gun? Put a tattoo on his forehead?
He goes into a gun shop to buy one. He fills out the application, and doesn’t have to lie. They gun shop guy sells him the gun. The DOJ can’t stop him from doing that, and Zimmerman commits no crime.
