Pasadena Assemblyman Urges Florida Boycott Over 'Stand-your-ground' Law (CA Lib liar)
Los Angeles Daily News ^ | 7/18/2013 | By Dana Bartholomew, Staff Writer

No more strolling on South Beach, no more key lime pie in Key West, no more visiting Mickey at Walt Disney World.

After the not-guilty verdict in the shooting of Trayvon Martin, a California lawmaker called Wednesday for a statewide boycott of Florida.

Assemblyman Chris Holden, D-Pasadena, is drawing up a resolution on behalf of the California Legislative Black Caucus to urge residents of the Golden State to boycott the Sunshine State until the latter repeals its "stand-your-ground" law.

"Another young black child is dead and nobody is being held accountable, said Holden, who is black and has four teenage sons. "It is a true nightmare scenario for every black parent in America.

"By boycotting Florida tourism, conventions and conferences we send a clear message that the death of an unarmed black teenager cannot be tolerated."

A jury on Saturday acquitted George Zimmerman, 29, of second-degree murder and manslaughter in the 2012 shooting death of unarmed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Fla.

The verdict following the racially charged murder trial sparked demonstrations in Los Angeles, Oakland and other major U.S. cities.

Prosecutors accused Zimmerman, who is Hispanic, of wrongly believing Martin was criminal because he was black. Defense lawyers argued he shot Martin in self-defense.

The "stand your ground" law, which played an important role in his defense, was approved in 2005 and has since been copied by roughly 30 other states. It allows people fearing for their lives to use deadly force without having to retreat from confrontation, even if it is possible.

Holden's call for California to boycott Florida comes after soul singer Stevie Wonder vowed never again to perform in Florida until the state repeals the self-defense law. The performer declared his position at a concert Sunday, saying he also wouldn't sing in any state or part of the world where the law exists.

Holden said his resolution will be introduced when the state Assembly and Senate recess ends in early August.

The former Pasadena city councilman said it follows similar boycotts of Arizona by Pasadena and Los Angeles after the state passed a controversial immigration enforcement law.

Pasadena experienced its own version of a racially charged shooting last year. Holden was serving on Pasadena's City Council last year when two police officers responding to a bogus 9-1-1 armed robbery call chased another unarmed black teen. They shot and killed Kendrec McDade, a 19-year-old football standout, after he appeared to reach for his waistband.

The McDade shooting drew protests from civil rights leaders Jesse Jackson and the Rev. Al Sharpton who called for an end to racial profiling in Pasadena and other cities.

Holden never called for a boycott of his city at the time, and in an interview Wednesday continued to defend the actions of Pasadena police and drew a distinction between the incidents.

"It's two different cases," he said. "It was an individual (McDade) who was fleeing from police. (Trayvon Martin) wasn't fleeing from police, he was fleeing an individual with a gun who was told by police not to.

"The facts of the circumstances are different. One can argue they're the same, but they are different."

Holden said that when he heard the Zimmerman verdict read last week, he was disappointed and saddened. He later asked himself, Didn't Trayvon Martin have a right to stand his ground? What were Trayvon Martin's rights? He said any one of his sons could have been similarly shot, a sad commentary on racial injustice in America.

"That's the fear: that any one of them coming home from school could have been caught in the same situation," he said. "That's what brings the horror of this home."

Does this idiot not realize that in California, not only do you have Stand Your Ground rights, but if it enhances your safety, you may also PURSUE your attacker?

"'Another young black child is dead and nobody is being held accountable'"

Does this person have any idea how idiotic this statememt is? One street thug in FLA as compared to dozens and dozens of truly innocent black children who are murdered across the United States by their own peers and nobody gives a tinker's damn, but they will crocodile tear their way through a selfserving speech about an incident that never needed to happen because someone defended himself from an attacker who was black and would still be alive if he had simply gone home.
Most of the other murdered black children do not have that chance. They are shot down like fish in a barrel and I don't see any damn crocodile tears for them. I don't see them remembered, memorialized, or even mentioned. It's deplorable. THEY are deplorable. And we should damn well let them know it.

They want a boycott? Shut off bet. Shut off sharpton. Rally against jackson. Ask the un to investigate operation push. Give them exactly what they ask for. The boycott of anything and everything they are involved in. No more jamie foxx and sam jackson or any other big mouth, racist black actors and recording jerks or nfl and mlb games. SHUT THEM DOWN! Why give them your hardearned money to insult you and TRY to insult your intelligence?
I am so sick of this I could scream.

Ping.

FU*K Holden and all demonrats in California; as a native Californian I SAY BOYCOTT CALIFORNIA and all the socialist parasites that are living off my tax dollar here.
Not only boycott but quarantine my state until it gets it’s sh*t straightened out.
Hang every politician; Demonrat, Rino Green, Red, and every other color and description in the state.
30 million people in this state, and all but about 20 thousand are wetbacks, wellfare cheats, dopers and general losers.
Please nuke Sacramento, San Francisco, LA, Santa Monica, etc, etc, etc.
I say this as a person who lives here and retired here (unfortunately).

Don’t you need to be STANDING to stand your ground?..

.Zimmerman claimed that he was on his back with Martin on top...

That is not standing..how do you retreat in that position?.

If you can retreat with your back on ground with someone on top then we need to rethink rape laws too

Although tourism is our big industry, I think I would like Florida better without nawthern liberal tourists. It would probably be a much more civil, polite, genteel, kinder, gentler place.

Oh...and we could probably handle our agriculture without having illegals as well.

Let them all boycott Florida...it will make it a better place.

I'm so sick of this.

In Texas, when a baby boy Trayvon type hits a person in the face and beats his/her head on the concrete, he will be shot and shot and shot before the innocent person's head is beaten on the concrete. It's Texas law to defend yourself no matter if the perp is a baby boy of 6 feet tall. You do not have to retreat in Texas, just shoot the sucker.

There are so many baby boy blacks killing each other in Chicago, and no one seems to do anything about it. Hundreds are being killed. Are any of the killers being arrested? I just read on FR a day or so ago, that more gun laws have been passed for Chicago to eliminate more assault rifles. Maybe I'm wrong, but aren't the weapons handguns the black baby boys are using to kill each other? They aren't going to give up one weapon of any kind.

Some states and communities used to do that, but court rulings shut them down. With the prohibition against any return no longer enforceable, the trip out of state was no longer one way and became only a vacation of sorts.

By ALL means, I hope this person DOES stay away from Florida.

ALL of you who hate the second amendment, feel free to NEVER come to Florida. Seriously. Never.

I have refused to go to Nevada since the state re-elected that moron Harry Reid over Sharon Angle...and I won’t go back until the punk is replaced with a constitutionalist.

So please, liberals, follow the example of Stevie Wonder...stay away from Florida. We’ll be VERY glad you aren’t around.

“When did St. Tray’s biological parental units call in the missing person’s report?”

The next morning his father realized he wasn’t there, so he first called the Juvenile Detention Center and then called the police to see if he was in jail.

I’m sure if my kid was missing, I’d first call Juvenile Detention - not.

-- There are 30 states with stand your ground laws. --

California is one of them.

People v. Newcomer, (1897) 118 Cal. 263, 273. ("[W]hen a man without fault himself is suddenly attacked in a way that puts his life or bodily safety at imminent hazard, he is not compelled to fly or to consider the proposition of flying, but may stand his ground and defend himself to the extent of taking the life of the assailant, if that be reasonably necessary [in the name of California self-defense].")

The "stand your ground" law, which played an important role in his defense, was approved in 2005 and has since been copied by roughly 30 other states.

The only way this statement is accurate is that if by "important," the illiterate person who wrote this means "NONE."
