HHS Admits: You Might Not Be Able to Keep Your Doctor Under Obamacare
Weekly Standard ^ | July 19, 2013 | JERYL BIER

Flashback: "If you've got a doctor that you like, you will be able to keep your doctor," Obama said.

As Obamacare was being pushed through Congress in 2010, the Obama administration and its allies were unequivocal in two claims: If you like your doctor and you like your current health care plan, you can keep them both. HHS Secretary Kathleen Sibelius and then-House speaker Nancy Pelosi backed the president fully in this regard. The White House even went so far as to post a "Health Insurance Reform Reality Check" on its website, where "Linda Douglass of the White House Office of Health Reform debunks the myth that reform will force you out of your current insurance plan or force you to change doctors." President Obama upped the ante, putting the promise in the form of a "guarantee":

THE PRESIDENT: Here is a guarantee that I've made. If you have insurance that you like, then you will be able to keep that insurance. If you've got a doctor that you like, you will be able to keep your doctor. Nobody is trying to change what works in the system. We are trying to change what doesn't work in the system.

While there has been sniping back and forth between the administration and its detractors about the real-world application and implementation of Obamacare, the new Healthcare.gov website has taken some of the mystery out of the controversy. And President Obama and his administration do not fare well in this latest "reality check." Among the questions that HHS recently added to the website: "Can I keep my own doctor?":

"Depending on the plan you choose in the Marketplace, you may be able to keep your current doctor." The bottom line is that Obamacare guarantees neither. Doctors may be only available through certain networks, just as in the current system. And only plans that existed in their current form on March 23, 2010, are even eligible to be "kept." The vast majority of plans will be new, subject to a raft of new regulations, requirements, and restrictions.

Now that Health and Human Services has confirmed that the suspicions of Obamacare opponents were justified, the Obama administration will have some explaining to do to friends and foes of the law alike. Because now everyone is finding out "what's in it."

With Medicare Advantage, there are various plans with varying deductibles and premiums, depending on what they cover. Medicare negotiates the coverage and premiums with each state individually.

Probably, the same will be true with policies through Obamacare exchanges.

My doctor will accept some state approved MA plans, but not others. That is his choice. It partly has to do with the requirements/restrictions a plan or a provider imposes on the doctor.

they no longer take Medicare patients. Including current patients.

I have heard several passing comments by radio talkshow hosts that Medicare is in for 'big' changes next year due to Obamacare. They do not elaborate, so I don't know what those 'big' changes will be -- cost? services?

Usually, the Medicare information for the next calendar year is not available until October of the current year.

I know, locally, some doctors do not take 'new' Medicare patients and some doctors do not take any 'Medicaid' patients [Medicaid is state, whereas Medicare is Federal].

and instead of pounding Obama everyday with that quote and the rest of the scandals and disasters ...what do republicans do?

Piss off their base by passing amnesty.

There are no words that can accurately describe the stupidity of those foolish and corrupt jackasses.

Ultimately, particularly if you are elderly and no longer considered productive by society, you will see a bureaucrat who will give you end of life counseling and a pill.

But he seems like such a nice, helpful bureaucrat.

Of course you'll need a friend or relative around to try to get you some treatment other than that final pill.

At first.... yep. Spot on. Seeing this already, in fact.

Later on.... yep, totally concur here, too.

Ultimately.... Disagree here.

I just think that ultimately, you won't see anyone. Think of an office with banks of phones, endlessly ringing. Because if there's one thing that bureaucrats hate, it's taking responsibility for anything. And a 'Death Panel' implies responsibility.

Honestly, I'd rather have a 'Death Panel'. Would have someone to hold accountable, and maybe, eventually, action might get taken. No answer at all....or maybe an endless phone tree ("Press 1 for Spanish. Press 2 for Arabic. Etc") ... gives no accountability.

Also, no one to get strung up by the angry mobs.

Some thought the phrase "death panel" implied that your were going to go in front of some final judge who would rule on your individual case and you might be able to plead for mercy. Instead the death panel would be a bunch of faceless bureaucrats deep in HHS deciding on whether to reduce the maximum age a diabetic with a BMI of 30.0 could get a quadruple bypass from 65 to 60. Your doctor would punch in a request for treatment into the computer and an unappealable and unspecified rejection would appear. You would never know that you were 3 pounds over some weight limit that you could lose in a couple weeks if (or because) your life depended on it.

At first you may be able to see a foreign educated immigrant doctor from Cuba, Pakistan, India who cannot speak the language well and likely will not understand what you say.

Later only nurse practitioners and physician’s assistants will be available unless you have special access privileges determined by government bureaucrats.

Ultimately, particularly if you are elderly and no longer considered productive by society, you will see a bureaucrat who will give you end of life counseling and a pill.

Long before we get to step three, robots will be taking the place of doctors and delivering service as good or better than human doctors deliver.

It's the hands-on medical profession that has no future under Obamacare.

From Facebook, circa 2009:

August 7, 2009 at 4:26pm

As more Americans delve into the disturbing details of the nationalized health care plan that the current administration is rushing through Congress, our collective jaw is dropping, and we’re saying not just no, but hell no!

The Democrats promise that a government health care system will reduce the cost of health care, but as the economist Thomas Sowell has pointed out, government health care will not reduce the cost; it will simply refuse to pay the cost. And who will suffer the most when they ration care? The sick, the elderly, and the disabled, of course. The America I know and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down Syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama’s “death panel” so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their “level of productivity in society,” whether they are worthy of health care. Such a system is downright evil.

Health care by definition involves life and death decisions. Human rights and human dignity must be at the center of any health care discussion.

Rep. Michele Bachmann highlighted the Orwellian thinking of the president’s health care advisor, Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, the brother of the White House chief of staff, in a floor speech to the House of Representatives. I commend her for being a voice for the most precious members of our society, our children and our seniors.

We must step up and engage in this most crucial debate. Nationalizing our health care system is a point of no return for government interference in the lives of its citizens. If we go down this path, there will be no turning back. Ronald Reagan once wrote, “Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we’ll ever see on this earth.” Let’s stop and think and make our voices heard before it’s too late.

My primary care physician is retiring at the end of the month after 51 years.

The office is adding another nurse practitioner; it will then consist of my doctor's son (an internist) and 2 NP's. They haven't been able to find another MD to take his place.
