"V" for Victory! It was on JULY 19, 1941, that British Prime Minister Winston Churchill held up two fingers as a sign of victory.

It became a symbol for all Western European resistance during WWII, with V's painted on walls and over Nazi posters.

In From War to War (Second World War, 1958, Vol. 1, ch. 4, p. 50), Winston Churchill described Hitler's Mein Kampf as:

"...the new Koran of faith and war: turgid, verbose, shapeless, but pregnant with its message."

Before the House of Commons, June 18, 1940, Churchill warned:

"I expect that the Battle of Britain is about to begin. Upon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilization...

The whole fury and might of the enemy must very soon be turned on us. Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this Island or lose the war."

"V for Victory" was a double entendre. Churchill's use of it had a second somewhat cruder meaning directed straight at Herr Hitler (although that was probably lost on the Germans like it was on most Americans).

One theory is that it was common practice by the French to sever the index and middle fingers of captured English long bowmen to symbolically unman them and prevent future service with the most feared weapon the English had. So before battle bowmen would hold up their two first fingers to basically say "come and get them".

Let's just say we Americans customarily convey the same message using just one finger.

You nailed it! Two fingers raised with the palm outward meant “V for Victory”.

Two upraised fingers with palm inward is the same as the upraised middle finger, in U.K., Australia, etc., to this day.

Sir Winston gave the palm-out “V” to the British people. He gave the palm-in `V’ to Der Foohrer.
