No one unites South Africans quite like Nelson Mandela

We are not always a very united people, us South Africans, despite the hype about our post-apartheid dispensation.

Our divisions – racial, economic, spatial and social – run deep. Nineteen years after our first democratic election, and a peace that has held despite numerous doomsday predictions, we often fall into the comfort of our divisions.

When one reads in the UK's Daily Mail that some South African whites believe that a "night of the long knives" (co-ordinated killing of whites by blacks) awaits them on the day Nelson Mandela dies, the reaction is not outrage. We know that such sentiments are common here.

One year after the last white is driven into the Southern Atlantic off Capetown, South Africa will descend into chaos with some ranting Mugabe consuming the last vestiges of civilization.

After that there may be another phenomenon: Indians or Chinese moving in and setting up quasi-colonial outposts, largely to get at the now abandoned resources.

The Bantu and Zulu tribes will simply be sold out by their tribal leaders (again) and end up as squat leader for the new, non-white colonial oppressors.

But since the oppressor class will be non-white, you’ll hear not a peep from the Liberals in the West. Or what’s left of the West after Obamugabe gets done with it.

Tyre around the neck is in fact called giving someone a necklace! Its a commin form of persuation or punishment for example if a person is accused of witchcraft or doesn’t partake in a strike and its quite effective from a terrorists point of view
