U.S. officials warn Russia against giving refuge to Edward Snowden (I'm laughing at my own country)

Fugitive secrets-spiller Edward Snowden isn’t yet out of his monthlong Moscow airport limbo, but U.S. officials have warned that Russia is provoking a diplomatic crisis with its reported granting of refuge to the American charged with espionage and theft.

Snowden, who arrived at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport June 23 with a revoked U.S. passport, was reportedly informed Wednesday that the Federal Migration Service would provide him with documents that would allow him to finally cross into Russian territory. Because he arrived from Hong Kong with no valid travel documents, he was denied entrance by border officials and has also been unable to buy airline tickets to go elsewhere.

I can't help but laugh at the thought of the US warning anyone now. Just can't.

No, no, better to send Caroline Kennedy, you know. They’d get so annoyed with the youknows, they’d send her and Snowden back PDQ!

Putin only needs to point out that the USA offers the same right of asylum. Per Wikipedia:

The United States honors the right of asylum of individuals as specified by international and federal law. [...] Asylum eligibility has three basic requirements. First, an asylum applicant must establish that he or she fears persecution.[2] Second, the applicant must prove that he or she would be persecuted on account of one of five protected grounds: race, religion, nationality, political opinion, and social group. Third, an applicant must establish that the government is either involved in the persecution, or unable to control the conduct of private actors.

Snowden:

  1. Fears persecution, and that has been already proven;
  2. Is persecuted for his political opinion. Technically what he did is a crime, but many political refugees are charged with some crime by their governments - it's always illegal to oppose the dictator.
  3. The US government is directly involved.

This is in accordance with UN agreements on human rights. Perhaps if the USA and Russia had a mutual agreement on extradition then things would be different. But then Russia would ask for extradition of many characters, shady or not.

The Russians can go on to add that the US has not sent back any of the many Russians currently residing in the US who have given the US the same kinds of “secrets” that Snowden holds.

>>>The Russians can go on to add that the US has not sent back any of the many Russians currently residing in the US who have given the US the same kinds of “secrets” that Snowden holds.<<<<

Neither present Russia nor even Soviet Union has ever issued demands like that about defectors if the case was obviously political. It is simply too stupid.

The problem is United States granted asylum to numerous muslim terrorist wanted in Russia for killing servicemen and innocent civilians which is clearly criminal, not a political issue.
None of them were extradited.

Oooooooo! I think Russia may be put on double secret probation by FUBO! In every way imaginable, FUBO is Putin’s bitch! Sad to say, but true nonetheless.
