Losing faith in government
Jewish World Review ^ | July 25. 2013/ 18 Menachem-Av, 5773 | Cal Thomas

According to a USA Today/Bipartisan Policy Center poll, "Americans by more than 2-1 say the best way to make positive changes in society is through volunteer organizations and charities, not by being active in government." Even better news: People under 30 are especially put off by politics and are "significantly less likely than their parents to say participating in politics is an important value in their lives."

Why is this good news? There are at least two reasons. One is that the less faith people have in government, the more they are likely to have in themselves. The second is that a public loss of faith in politics and politicians increases the possibility of government becoming smaller. That could mean less spending, a smaller deficit and ultimately, one hopes, lower taxes.

(snip)

If Republicans want to regain trust, they should be focusing less on the failures of Democrats and more on the successes of Republican governors, Republican legislatures, charitable organizations like My Safe Harbor and volunteers. They are achieving goals Washington can't. Instead, Washington continues to misspend too much money with little to show for it, except ever-increasing debt.

The USA Today poll found that young people put "elected official or working for one" at the very bottom of their career choices. Given the performance of Washington's political class, who can blame them?

A headshaker. Sometimes when I see a story like this one I get the feeling that the premise, or the default, is that people should "have faith in government". But really, how big a moron do you have to be to have any faith in government in the first place? It is strictly a criminal enterprise.

I have read that one of Ubama's predecessors, Al Capone, was beloved in Chicago because he handed out candy to kids and goodies to people on the streets, "outta the goodness of his heart", but is that where America is supposed to be? Unfortunately, it seems that is exactly where America is. Witness the success the Democrat party has had confiscating taxes from productive Americans who get up and go to work every day and handing it over to the armies of moochers in exchange for their votes.

"Faith in government"?? The very concept makes me throw up in my mouth a little.

Its goal is not to addict people to a government check, but to free them from dependency so they can have the dignity that goes with earning their own check.

Its more of the same "changing the hearts and minds" nonsense coming from Cal Thomas, a fat, old chivalrous conservative.

Sure it may work in an isolated case here or there, but there are millions who are perfectly willing to remain one of the takers until the whole thing falls apart.

We aren't going to win our freedom back by convincing others to not be parasites on us.

If freedom is to be had, it must be taken back.

But if we ever got into a shooting conflict against our oppressors, I know conservatives like Cal Thomas would be condemning it.

Thats because people like Cal Thomas aren't conservative at all.

They are only conservative in the sense that he's an old man and time and the left has passed him by.

People like him have no principled commitment to limited government and don't intrinsically distrust the state.

They are just horrified at what its become without understanding that it couldn't end up any other way once we started traveling down that road.

I agree (I am also 67).
We lost our great country. We let politicians destroy it.

Disagree, this is the perfect time to point out the poor judgement of Democrats, 5 years of bungled economics and "recovery" talk shows Limbaugh was right again, Bush didn't cut taxes enough.

I don't think you really know Cal Thomas.

He is a born again Christian, has integrity to his bones, and knows exactly how evil government is.

“........knows exactly how evil government is”.........

The entire group in Washington known as the “government” needs to be purged. There are those (Reid, Pelosi, McCain, Bohner and numerous others that have outlived their purpose and have done their utmost to destroy this once great nation. When, oh when will the American people wake up and be rid of these cancers?

You have stated the basic cause of our current situation: government indoctrination. Couple that with most younger adults having been raised by parents who both worked outside the home and you have many people who were never instilled with the understanding of patriotism, liberty and responsibility.

Seems like an opposition party ought to look at that and decide they should start working on cutting the size of government.
