They all took the citys firefighter exams in 1999 and 2002, but none got hired.
Six months ago, thanks to a controversial ruling by Brooklyn Federal Judge Nicholas Garaufis, all five now older, a touch grayer and maybe just a little bit wiser got a second chance at their dream job.

As usual, PC trumps any safety issues.
I'd be extra vigilant if I lived in NY, in the event of a fire, you may be on your own...
Boy, talk about a journalist expressing a point of view by omitting pertinent facts.
Let me fix it: They all took the citys firefighter exams in 1999 and 2002, but NONE OF THEM PASSED THE FREAKING TEST!!!
Proficiency tests are Old School.
We New School.
Who the hell names their kid Ginger?
“I wonder if the medical and stress tests were “dumbed down?””
It doesn’t say anything like that in the article. They failed the test the first time, trained some more, took it again, and most of them passed. Some still failed. So, unless we hear something else, I have to assume its the same test.
The only bad thing I see is that the minority applicants who failed are being given priority in retaking the test over other applicants. They should go to the back of the line like everyone else.
Why in the world would we want the most qualified people? That is so racist!
“Who the hell names their kid Ginger?”
The mother of the “movie star” character on “Gilligan’s Island?”
Actually, I once knew a business woman here in Maine named Ginger.
Six months ago, thanks to a controversial ruling by Brooklyn Federal Judge Nicholas Garaufis, all five now older, a touch grayer and maybe just a little bit wiser got a second chance at their dream job had standards lowered for them so they could get the job ahead of more qualified whites.
When I was growing up in the 60s, “Ginger” was a nickname for “Virginia.”

Make-work for wealth re-distribution. Remember after 9/11, when NYC wasn’t going to replace ANY of the 343 firemen killed because they were overstaffed? Remember all of the politicking about it (showing tearful ethnics outside the firehouses that were going to be closed)? In the end, all that will change is the race of the firement sleeping in the firehouses...
