Initial jobless claims rose more than expected last week to 343,000, but continued to signal moderate labor market growth.

The number of people who filed for first-time unemployment benefits for the week ending Saturday was up 7,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 336,000, the Labor Department said Thursday.

Economists surveyed by Bloomberg News had projected the level to be 340,000.

And to make the numbers look reasonably good, here is what the “news” tell us :

“The four-week average for jobless claims, which smooths out some of the volatility, was down 1,250 to 345,250 last week. Weekly claims below 350,000 indicate a jobs market that is expanding moderately, economists say.”

The manipulation of the population is astounding. The headlines in 2003-2007 of sheer doom when we had unemployment at or below 5% and much stronger growth numbers compared to the excuse making of the past five years is nauseating.

343,000

I know I'm supposed to think that is just normal transitioning between jobs and all, but the truth is, I've transitioned between jobs and NOT gone on unemployment.

If you leave your job without one already lined up, and must go on unemployment, then that is not a good thing.

I need some help from FR.

I know they fudge the numbers. I know they count part time jobs, etc in their numbers to inflate the stats.

But, how can I listen to WSB radio tell me this morning that jobless claims are down, but I can read this article that tells me the opposite?

The numbers are the numbers. Who the hell is right?

The numbers are the numbers. Who the hell is right?

Up or down vs...what?

Versus the previous week? Or the same year-ago period? Or "expectations"?

The media changes the frame-of-reference to present the numbers in the most favorable light.

Please answer:

350,000 people apply for first time unemployment. This has been going on every month for YEARS!

At what point are there no more people who can lose their jobs, and thus first time unemployment applications start to drop, and celebrations occur?

What am I missing, or too stupid to realize?
