The federal government has demanded that major internet companies turn over users stored passwords, two sources told the respected tech website CNet.
So what exactly does this escalation as CNet calls it mean?
If the government is able to determine a persons password, which is typically stored in encrypted form, the credential could be used to log in to an account to peruse confidential correspondence or even impersonate the user, the report says. Obtaining it also would aid in deciphering encrypted devices in situations where passwords are reused.

Mine is still password?
Of course, they aren’t actually snooping or tying any of this information to people by name. < /BULLSTALIN >
It’s all just about the metadata, right?
Stalinists lie. ALWAYS.
user passwords given to the Feds will end up at the DNC
What a backfire all anyone has to do is say they were framed by a hacked password.

Next the Obama FEC will be demanding a copy of all keys including electronic cards to all of the RNC campaign offices as well as any church or tea party PAC.
Because of this totalitarian overreach, you’ll never see legislation prohibiting employers from demanding password access to all email and social media accounts. It will become just cause to terminate employment without prior incident.
As we learned from the Petraeus affair, terrorists generally leave messages for each other in the Draft folder and then just log in from either end to read them. They don’t send packets through the web.
And what happens when somebody actually changes their password?
Considering the brilliance of government employees I would imagine they did not think of this EVER happening.
They will claim that it is for “national security” as authorized under the Patriot Act.
But can’t you tell where the logins are coming from? And don’t you send the packets to the server?
They will never implement on line elections because the gubment could rig the elections and that wouldn’t be fair to the tax payers, just the tax takers.
