An Ohio inmate whose 450-pound weight became an issue in his death penalty case has died seven months after being granted clemency, officials said Friday.
Ronald Post died Thursday morning at a prison hospital where hed been treated on and off since 2011, a state prisons spokeswoman said. He was a week shy of his 54th birthday.
Post was sentenced to death for killing Elyria motel clerk Helen Vantz on Dec. 15, 1983. His attorneys sought mercy for Post ahead of his Jan. 16 execution date on the grounds that he was so obese that he could not be executed humanely.

Overfed I would say too. Betcha that weight was less 30 years ago.
He couldn’t fit into the execution chamber....
Bring the execution chamber to him.
They asked for mercy.
How much mercy did he show Helen Vantz?
Guess we can’t find out. She’s been dead for 30 years while the fat pig lived a happy life being slopped and fed by the taxpayers.
Works for me.
You can execute anyone humanly by using nitrogen asphyxiation.
Place a medical breathing mask over the mouth and nose. Put a head band to monitor brain activity. Apply 100% nitrogen at 1.1 atmospheres to the breathing mask and wait till the brain monitor shows no activity for 5 min.
The person painlessly will pass out in seconds and will be dead shortly after.
Any word on his last meal?
It would be cheaper and faster to feed death row inmates to death.
Helen Vantz unavailable for comment.
How did this guy get enough calories to balloon to 450 pounds on a prison diet?
I bet a deer rifle would have made short work of him.
Should have just shot the bastard.
IIRC, there was not a needle big enough to have entered his fat veins. He successfully sued based on that and his execution was put on hold.
Although I’m pretty sure a firing squad would have been a most quick, effiecient and painless way to die.
What was the murder weapon, his buttocks or his dunlap?
Make it a picnic: Invite the prison law attorneys to the meals.
Good mission for a Chinook slingload accident with him as The Load.
We’ve had this kind of problem ever since they did away with hanging, eloctrocution and firing squads. A thirty eight to the head would be instantaneous, painless, and cheap. It wold work equally as well if the condemned weighed 6o or 600 pounds. Should have been done twenty nine and a half years ago
Eric Holder is going to look into the maltreatment of this prisoner that led to his death.
” Although Im pretty sure a firing squad would have been a most quick, effiecient and painless way to die.”
Then melt him down, to make candles for the inmates.
