A musical prayer for you, M-L.

A Beethoven slow movement tends to be a conversation with God. One of the deepest slow movements is from a late quartet, a prayer titled, “Holy Song of Thanks for Recovery from an Illness”. It’s like nothing else in Beethoven’s output.

One middle period quartet from Beethoven has a wild fugue for a finale. The viola sets the pace, and the metronome marking for this finale is absolutely insane. At 5:17 he drop kicks the melody off the cliff, and you lean forward waiting for it to go splat. It’s one of his greatest endings.
