Why have there been so few openly gay ambassadors?
Washington Post ^ | July 26, 2013 | By Dennis Jett

Thomas Bayard, a former senator and secretary of state, became the first American diplomat to be given the title “ambassador” when he was sent to London in 1893. Since then a few thousand people have had that honor. But only three of them have been openly gay.

That is about to change. Last month, President Obama put forward the names of five openly gay nominees for ambassadorial posts. It’s a remarkable step, though possibly less revolutionary than it appears. For while the nominations reflect the change in public attitudes toward the LGBT community, they also show the importance of domestic political constituencies and the money they raise. And even if the United States is moving forward on gay rights, a large part of the rest of the world lags far behind.

It was only 16 years ago that the first openly gay person was nominated to an ambassadorial posting. President Bill Clinton put forward James Hormel’s name in 1997 for Luxembourg, a country smaller in population than the District of Columbia, and immediately ran into congressional opposition. Several senators firmly opposed Hormel, a prominent philanthropist and grandson of the founder of the meat company that created Spam, because he was gay. . .

All Islamic countries are out, so there goes the Middle East, North Africa (it says “openly”), and a sizeable chunk of Asia. Latin American culture is not exactly wild about gays, so there goes Central and South America. African nations are very much against gays. Traditional Asian cultures would not be what one could call flattered by such a gesture, nor would some Eastern Europeans. This is not rocket surgery to figure out.

Because they are GAY! Honduras for example, said the the gay ambassador that obama sent to them was an “insult”. Mugabe has said that he will just cut off their heads.

Homosexuals are 2% of the general population, we have had what 300 ambassadors the last 100 years........my guess we have had was more than six homosexuals in that position.
2% of the population does mean you should get 50% of the jobs.

Why are there so few decorated enlisted military retirees appointed as ambassadors? I'm sure they outnumber homosexuals in our nation's demographics.

I believe the most accurate estimates of homosexuals in the US is at 2% - slightly more for males, slightly under for females. That was a few years ago before the great PR campaign for them got underway. They claim 10% which is bogus. Why is Obama going overboard for them. Do they represent more dollars than the anti-gay donors? Or is there another reason?
